BIRDS OF PREY #20

Written by CHRISTY MARX

Art and cover by ROMANO MOLENAAR and VICENTE CIFUENTES

On sale MAY 15 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

The traitor revealed! Who will aid Mr. Freeze as he continues his onslaught against The Court of Owls—and how can the Birds hope to stop him?

Hm, I'd say Nora's sister (who became a female version of Mr Freeze to get back at Victor for "ruining Nora's life") but considering Nora, as Victor saw her, never existed in the DCnU... Yeah, I dunno.

NIGHTWING #20

Written by KYLE HIGGINS

Art and cover by BRETT BOOTH and NORM RAPMUND

On sale MAY 15 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

After witnessing so much death in the past few months, how will Nightwing react when he learns a key figure in his life has returned from the grave?

So... Cass Cain (retconned the same way as her mum) or some new figure?

http://www.comicvine.com/news/exclusive-batman-group-may-2013-solicits/146003/

Two new series focusing on the super rich of the DCU, and everyone else.

The Movement #1:

We are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive.
Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?
When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK. Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.
We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

And The Green Team #1:

INVENTORS! EXPLORERS! ADVENTURERS! Do you need money to finance an important project? Then you should set up a meeting with THE GREEN TEAM!
• Nature of world-changing idea:
• Amount requested:
• Does your project have the potential to:
Fracture space-time?
Replace the combustion engine?
Attract extraterrestrial attention?
Prove/disprove existence of deities?
Piss off The Justice League?
Render the human body obsolete?
If any of the above are checked, please fill out liability release form GT2013-05. Send any 82 drawings, plans, models, or photos with request.

Heh, timely. Very 2012.

Since when has The Ventriloquist been one of Batman's most violent foes?

I actually like the cover otherwise, although I'm not certain how disfiguring Ventriloquist benefits the characters role, but I guess we will see.

Still would disagree. He is violent and prone to rage, but nowhere near the levels of the bigger names in Batman rogue gallery.

On more thought, I actually it is a good idea to shift him/her to Batgirl. It allows Batgirl to deal with a legacy villain, but one that is not too big of a name.

It's the ever changing DCnU, a new Ventriloquist history is entirely possible, or perhaps Payton has been making up for lost bodycount.

Looking at the cover as a concept it would be kind of cool if Batgirl were seen by the villain as Batman's 'puppet', and thus the issues (whatever they may be) from the DOTF would be even more of an open wound for Babs.

Sorry, but Cass has never been "a key figure" in Dick's life. She's been an ally, but an ally to Batman, the same way he is.

No idea who she could be, or why Nightwing appears to be wearing little X's over his masks eyeholes.

I thought it was tape, as in his eyes have been taped shut. Though quite why, I remain in the dark. Huh... pun not intended. But it does look like he's flailing somewhat blindly.

And sometimes in the DCnU you wonder if that's entirely a bad thing, for her sake if not for ours...

My guess is it'll be the young lady from the circus who was aiding the fake Talon and who Joker did something to and then had her die from Joke venom recently.

Dick's not old enough to have that many people from his past that we haven't met yet, though. Maybe it's the New 52 Donna Troy?

As someone who will be running a teen her super hero game in a few months, I must say the Movement and Team Green deeply intrigue me. I will certainly be picking up both.

Yeah, those Movement/Green Team titles seem about a year out of late. Not to say that they're not still relevant, but they're not exactly riding the zeitgeist either. Also not liking the idea of a government using superpowered lackeys to enforce order, it seems like a little too much, like the kind of thing that shouldn't quite fit in the DCU. Could be interesting.
And that Ventriloquist design.... sure is something.

It's not any lack of realism that I'm taking issue with, sure the government uses drones, and in this ficitional world it'd be entirely reasonable for them to take an interest in superhumans. My problem is that it might not fit well conceptually into the DCU, depending on how far they go with the concept (how evil the government is and how many operatives the have, etc) and it could wind up being a situation where you have to wonder why the Justice League or someone else of that level doesn't step in to stop some cartoonishly evil dudes.
It's sort of like the bothersome fridge logic that's up until recently had dudes like Captain America and Iron Man remain relatively uninvolved in mutant issues. It's wouldn't necessarily take anything away from the book, but I think it could still give the Movement/Green Team a weird sense that it's either disconnected from the rest of the DCU, or everyone outside of those titles is somehow an idiot who's failed to notice that a "toxic government" is using :"super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace" which sounds like the sort o thing that a lot of superheroes would take issue with.
Plus I tend to find government superhumans, especially the vaguely evil kind to be boring and would rather not have them wandering around my books. I prefer things to be kept light.

I agree with you. Moreso because 'topical' comics become absurdly dated rather quickly. Three series of Freedom Fighters did the theme to death rather effectively, so it's not as if DC hasn't taken a crack at the topic.
OTOH if the writer were to address the idea that Governmental Super Enforcers (or drones0 would be readily accepted by both the populace and the regular super types if employed by a charismatic leader it's not only topical but universal as well, and wouldn't necessarily date itself.
Lastly, on a purely selfish note, I wish the writer such overwhelming success on the series that Batgirl might finally be turned over to a new scribe who might better serve the character/series, because it's just painful to read.

You're mistaking rhetoric with objective fact. Take Batman: the Gotham PD have a bat-signal on their roof, they turn it on, Batman shows up, he solves their problems for them. Is that the "government [calling] down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace"? Well yeah, sure. And if you think the government is corrupt to begin with, well.

That's a good point actually, it puts my mind at ease. So long as superheroes being characterized as government lackeys is just the protagonists' viewpoint, there shouldn't be any logical problems.

Not sure how I think about "The Movement" or... "The Green Team" (a concept I doubt Joe Simon would want on his resume.) Though it would be kinda cool if the leader of "The Movement" turned out to be Anarky. (I mean Lonnie. Not his lame-ass replacement from Nicieza's run on Robin.)

How the heck can they make an artbook for a series that has only had like a dozen episodes so far? The other artbook had material for three whole 26-episodes seasons.

And why, oh why is The Search coming out at such a snail's pace? One issue every half a year is ridiculous.

I suppose there is a lot of world building required before they could even make an episode.

Though this is the artbook that intruigues me at the moment, I can't afford it, but it sounds so NICE!

Wouldn't Strix logically be the "traitor" to the Birds helping Freeze wipe out the Court?

Considering that she's been revealed to be a double-agent for Amanda Waller since #0, it's probably Starling as the traitor.

As for the Nightwing solicit, I can't help but notice that the x's over the eyes motif is also shared by a new character introduced in this month's Green Arrow, Magnus. I'm thinking that's the connection--that at some point Nightwing trained on the island that Oliver Queen crashed into.
