I think you've got the order of those scans wrong. At least I hope so, if the comic was as headache inducing to follow then Marvel really had some rotten luck editing-wise.
I always liked the line in "The Infinity Gauntlet" (or one of the follow ups) where Thanos notes that he has no idea how powerful the Hulk could notionally become and has never been foolish enough to face him in physical combat to find out.
That was during the pre-Gauntlet Thanos Quest mini, for what it's worth. He was noting that Champion with the Power Gem had a Hulk-like ability to amp his strength without limit.
I figure Thanos' historical Hulk-avoidance was mostly due to his lower power levels before his resurrection. Back in the day, Thanos actually had trouble slugging it out with Thor and the Thing combined. After Thanos Quest, on the other hand, he tended to handle multiple Hulk-level bruisers at once, whether with the pimp hand or the Stooges routine. He also beat the Silver Surfer to death in short order, whereas the Hulk's rocked all over the Surfer without much effect (except when Norrin was weakened in Planet Hulk).
(Which is not to say that the Hulk couldn't rage up to rivaling or exceeding Thanos' strength. I just doubt he'd have a chance to get there.)
But then, Thanos is a prudent guy and doesn't pick fights when he doesn't need to, no matter what his chances.
Prequel, actually. Thanos Quest, in which he acquired the gems. It's kinda contradicted in the actual story, though, since it has Champion portrayed as a cosmic equivalent of Hulk and thoroughly schooled by Thanos.
Not quite the same I think, Champion is a known quantity (and something of an idiot IIRC) but his strength level is pretty much set. It's the fact the Hulk has apparently infinite potential to just keep getting stronger and stronger and stronger that gave Thanos pause.
His fighting style and such was also changed for the story to be more akin to Hulk. Berserking, becoming stronger as he got angrier, etc. The drawing of the parallel was pretty clear.
