This year I attended the second London Super Comic Convention, and had a LOT of fun.

There were some great panels (Though I only attended the "Batman through the Ages" one, which had Brian Bolland, Gary Frank, David Finch and Neal Adams on the panel (and included the unforgettable moment of Neal Adams testing the microphone by singing "Over at the Frankenstein Place" to the room, and did it well too!) and some absolutely terrific cosplayers (The Rule 63 Deadshot was excellent, the Jack of Hearts was spectacular, the G'nort was... unforgettable, and the two little lads of colour (One was black, the other was, I think, Indian), who can't have been more than five or six, as Young Justice Nightwing and Captain America and who were wandering around hand in hand (Their dad's were with them I hasten to add), were among the most preciously adorable things I've seen in a long time (and I mean that in an absolutely wholesome sense)

There were several high profile guests, and we'll get to those later, because sometimes it's the lesser known artists who impress.

One of them, Yasmin Liang, is a former member of s_d (She couldn't remember her username and I didn't press) and who is producing some stellar work over at her website.

This is an Elizabethan reworking of a certain Gotham based superheroine.

Though it's not completely clear from the pose, she's wearing pantaloons rather than a skirt or leggings...

(Suffice it to say we may well be talking about me commissioning her to produce another Gotham hero or two in this sort of style!)

I can also recommend her Trinity Mothers piece.

Also worth a look is the Despop site, where the artist Des Taylor has his work up, a stylish collation, which you may have seen before (He did the faux "Life" (or rather "Live")  magazine covers featuring DC heroes a while back)

I happened upon Lee Garbett almost by accident, I hadn't registered that he was attending, and though perhaps best known to us here on S_D for his work on the sadly missed Stephanie Brown Batgirl series, he was happy to turn his hand to another Gotham hero!

Who's a pretty birdboy then!

But my "perfect trifecta" haul for this weekend was all about the cute blond linguist who is dear to my heart.

First up Bob McLeod was in attendance, and to my surprise was taking commissions. As he is responsible for creating the look of the classic New Mutants team (and their uniforms), I couldn't resist. He actually left art duties on the title before Doug joined but I was prepared to be flexible! :)

I love the slightly uncertain expression, which I umagine Doug had, a LOT.

Also in attendance was Bill Sienkiewicz, who as the artist who DID oversee Doug joining the team, and created Warlock has also been on my "Commission dream list" for a long, long time. I had contacted in advance about getting a piece and he could not have been more agreeable or personable to deal with. Watching him work on a Batman and Poison Ivy piece in front of a crowd of fans was an extraordinary experience, seemingly random actions proving to be essential to the look of the thing ten minutes further on, you could only stand and gape at the sheer bloody talent of it.

He conjured this almost psychadelic, dreamlike piece of Warlock and Doug in comparatively short order, but it is an instant AWESOME!!! rating from me.

My scanner doesn't do this piece true justice with the colours...

And finally, yes, it's another Warlock and Cypher piece, and from an artist who has drawn just about every mainstream character in DC and Marvel over the last 35 years or so and yet, has never drawn the New Mutants. Luckily he had me to change that, for two of them at least, and I managed to get on his pre-Convention list.

Guess who!

Perez Cypher Complete_800

Yup, it's George Perez giving me his take on the Team Supreme, and he really does rise to a challenge doesn't he? :) I honestly wasn't sure what sort of a look he'd use for Warlock, the smoother, sleeker Art Adams style or the cartoony look of Davis... but I'm delighted he decided to go a little wild and crazy (NOT two words normally associated with Mr Perez) and let out his inner Sienkiewicz to the extent of Warlock encroaching on Doug's "side"! Even HE seemed a little surprised at what he'd managed!

Three major Cypher achievements in one Con, where does one go from here, I wonder! :)

Bill Sienkiewicz! Awesome!

I would've loved to have gotten a dream-like Moon Knight sketch from him. That was a character from his early days, before he really took off.

Love all of those!

I somehow missed that this was on until it was too late. Boo! Maybe next year I'll make an appearance and even do some cosplaying.

Yeah, there's been some fantastic stuff that I've seen so far. Including a Beast that was completely off the scale. I'm not that ambitious, I just need to actually wear my Chamber sometime.

All quite beautiful but the Batwoman sketch especially gets me. She seems to inspire the best art! :)
