majingojira's second AVENGERS ACADEMY post showed Quicksilver saying "Magneto put Wanda and me in situations where we would rescue humans, the humans would turn against us, and Magneto would 'save' us and say humans are bad."

A very good example can be seen in issues #4 of the 1995 "Professor Xavier and the X-Men" series.

At the start of the issue, Xavier meets with Wanda and Pietro and offers them a place at his school. After rescuing a young child and showing they can control their powers, they turn him down. Xavier then talks to Moria MacTaggart about the twins, an his fear about Magneto getting followers.

Xavier tries one of his "Talk some sense into Magnus" things that never quite work out.

You know, to their credit, Magneto is almost always drawn with an imposing nature. He pretty much demands your eye on the page.

The thing is, Magneto doesn't just say that humans are bad, he correctly says that humans are bad. Humans in the MU are total bastards. "They saved a child. LET'S KILL THEM WITH FIRE!"

Thankfully people in the DCU are much nicer. Remember the pizza guy who saved Nightwing from a burning building and then gave him a lift to the Batcave? :)

Mostly I remember the woman who yelled at Superman for not saving her husband from a brain tumor with his heat/micro vision.

I kid, I kid. For the most part, DC citizens are pretty cool folk. With some exceptions.

Marvel's citizens tend to be terrible for no good reason. I'd honestly get it more if things were reversed, because I feel like DC citizens go through a lot worse stuff than Marvel citizens. Then again, maybe that's why they're more grateful to their superheroes.

Yeah, but if you remember that scene, after the woman yelled at Superman the crowd was totally on Superman's side, the bystanders basically called her a crazy asshole.

This is partly why I never understood the meme that Marvel Comics were more "realistic". If Spider-Man really existed in New York and saved the world as many times as he publicly as you can be sure the MAJORITY of the city and the major newspapers wouldn't be trashing him. They would treat him as a hero. The fact that Opal City built a massive stature to honor Ted Knight/Starman after he gave his life against the Myst or that Keystone/Central City built a Flash Museum always seemed a more "realistic" reaction to real super-heroes from the public. Heck, even Nolan ended his Dark Knight trilogy with the Gothamites (the hardest to please city in the DCU) putting up a Batman monument.

Marvel citizens are so bad that Grant Morrison turned their assholishness into an actual character. John Sublime anyone?

Were the "Friends of Humanity" doing pretty much the same thing before Sublime, to the extent of murdering children who had the X-gene?

DCU of old, yes, good people

DCnU, appears to suffer from much the same problem as the MU, most people are assholes.

They're a classic for a reason! The scene just wouldn't be the same if they used strimmers, or rakes.

I'm sure there's an untold Nextwave story where the team finds out every supervillain in the Marvel Universe is actually a pawn of some shadowy Pitchfork & Torches corporate cabal operating since the dawn of time.

Rural Europe in the MU is pretty firmly lodged in Hammer Horror country.
