It also occurs to me that the first Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes film takes elements from the spooky, Gothic Horror-influenced Scooby Doo Hoaxes from some of the stories (yes, Baskervilles wasn't the only time it happened), just as the second takes elements from the more political, espionage tinged ones. Smooth. :) Makes me wonder if the third will deal with conspiracies involving the KKK, Mormons or mutant monkeymen (yes, really).

And, yes, I will be covering occult detectives along the line.

What should I do next: Weird Westerns or Science Fiction Horror?

Okay, I knew about the Mormons (A Study In Scarlet) and the KKK (Five Orange Pips). But when did Sherlock go up against mutant monkeymen?

Dude was injecting himself was a rejuvenating serum, made from money glands, by a quack doctor in an attempt to woo a much younger woman, only he started morphing in to a monkeyman and got mauled to death by his own dog.

Huh, I read a complete collection of Sherlock Holmes stories before. You would think I would be able to remember that one. But no, even after your description I have no recollection of it at all.

It was collected in the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes collection, and was even adapted into the Jeremy Brett show. :) And, yeah, it comes of of left field there too.

I remember the subgenre of Gothic romance paperbacks from when I was a kid. Each and every one of them had a cover with an attractive young woman in a white dress or nightgown running outside a large manor or castle with only one window lit.

Years later, when I read Fruits Basket, I realized that with one of those covers, it would have fit right into the subgenre.

I'd recommend the recent Jane Goldman adapted Woman in Black movie that Daniel Radcliffe starred in as well. Excellent movie and a testament to how Traditional Horror can be a hell of a lot more scary than some dude being tied to a chair and tortured.

I liked Science Fiction Horror but I want to see Weird West more. If only for some more recommendations in the genre.
