Ultimate Spider-Man 21

A good issue, but bit of a filler.

We start of with Gwen running in to MJ for the first time in a while, where they then see the Venom fight on TV.




Does anybody remember the last time they met? I think it was Ultimate Spider-Men but I'm not sure.

Any way they decide to go over and give Miles some advice on fighting Venom. How could they possibly know so much about symbiotes? Well:





"Infinite nothingness"

It's easy to forget that the real Gwen's technically still dead and that she's an exact clone of the original, although granted I doubt it matter anymore.

Detective Hill comes in, having figured out who Miles is given that Pete's ex-girlfriend and the girl who lives with his aunt have just randomly appeared at a house where one of his past villains just beat up a man he thought was Spider-Man. She's asked to leave (no probable cause apparently) but tells Miles that this isn't a game and people are dying.

We flash over to the hospital where Mile's dad is being held. And then...




Round two.

I think it's safe to assume it isn't Eddie Brock in the suit anymore as he's probably either dead or in a Latverian prison/torture chamber. This person seems to have some kind of connection to Jefferson.



Also, why do all of Peter's girlfriends have to go through that awkward goth phase? Here's Gwen

Collars are not a good look. In any universe.

I have to disagree. Collars are Always a hot look in every universe. But thats just a personal taste issue. :D

At least this is consistent with Gwen's look since she was first introduced - although given Bagley had zero grasp of fashion it was toned down, and then when Lafuente took over on art duties post-Ultimatum. It doesn't quite work for MJ, though.

Also, really loving the new visual for Venom. Really goes back to the very first story with the Ultimate version and the fact that it is little more than a monster.

Wrong. Both of Peter's non-Gwen-girlfriends try to be Gwen.

...I miss Ultimate Gwen & Peter. So much wasted potential with that couple, just to go back to Mary Jane because reasons. Actually, the entire post Ultimatum status quo - with Peter & Gwen as a couple, Johnny & Bobby as 'Team Spidey' and living at "Aunt May's Home for Superhero Teens" - is wasted potential.

It was fun, that stage, could've been even better if character growth was the main aim of that 'arc', but it kinda went around in 'fun' circles. So I'm not mad that we have Miles Morales now, hopefully he can gain a 'Team Spidey' as well...

I liked Gwen's "Rarrr I cut you!" phase when she first appeared. Just as I liked nerdy Gwen in the cartoon. Or SCIENCE!Gwen in the Amazing Spider-Man movie...

Yeah I like her depiction everywhere except in the actual comics. Weird.

I like Gwen's various incarnations, but it's kinda weird for me, as I remember Gwen as 'the one that Spidey couldn't save', since I grew up in the 1970s and it was a BIG DEAL. Gwen's death was a watershed moment for Spidey and the comics and now it's just sort of a thing.

Well, it's still a deal for 616, but everywhere else, creators *really* want to dance with the character and give her a personality that isn't 'death'.
