Comics That Never Happened: New Young Justice

On his blog last Wednesday, former Supergirl writer Nick Spencer mentioned how before the interview he was planning to use the series, issue 62 to be exact, as a pilot for a new Young Justice series.

Starring who, you might ask? Well...


Jaime Reyes, Virgil Hawkins, M'gann M'Orzz, Iris West, Kara Zor-El, Steph Brown and Damian Wayne.

Bah, guess this will have to go in the vault with the Cass Cain, Mary Marvel and Stargirl series that Gail Simone was planning to do prior to the whole Robin: Wanted thing...

Okay, Iris in the impulse costume is ADORABLE. I once had an idea for a child speedster superhero, and Iris matches my vision for it pretty much exactly. down to the pig tails.

Yeah, I remember seeing this cover and thinking this line-up - even though I hated Damian with a burning passion - would've been really cool. It would've at least been infinitely superior to Teen Titans at the time. But.. Well, DC's getting rid of Spencer was undoubtedly Marvel and Image's gain.

Eh. Based on Simone's previous ideas for Cass, I'm almost glad that didn't go ahead, frankly.

I think that Gail Simone has said when she used Cass in BoP she got it wrong and I think the Angel of the Bat pitch (with Cass converting to Christianity and wearing an all-white costume) was original and daring even though in practice I couldn't see it working. It is a bit strange that Gail was one of DC's premier and most well-known exclusive writers (till recently) and not only could she not get the Cass/Mary/Stargirl pitch off the ground but I don't think Gail has EVER written either Stargirl or Mary Marvel (who Gail has repeatedly said is her favorite character of all time). Instead DC repeatedly gave the characters to lesser writers who not only did not seem to like the characters but showed little knowledge of them at all (Beechan with Cass and the Countdown writers - which included Beechan again! - with Mary).

It is just the Angel of the Bat pitch that I remember that just makes me think she wouldn't be ideal for Cass. To me, the idea of her 'getting religion' is kind of pointless, because she already basically had something that she was meant to aspire to and respect as a symbol, which was simply the bat itself. I just didn't see Gail's idea working, as interesting as it was.

But yeah, the other two? Stargirl is probably going to be linked to Johns forever, frankly, as evidenced by her new JLA appearance. But Mary deserved much better. I just don't know as I associate Simone with those types of characters; Her 'young teens' tend to include the likes of Misfit and Black Alice, and whilst I'm sure that's not her entire range, it doesn't quite lead me to 'Mary Marvel', who was meant to be, y'know, an absolute paragon.

You know, it really says something about DC when a crackfic about Harley Quinn successfully profiling Bruce and switching her affections to Joker is not only only more consistently well-written, but is actually experimenting with concepts new and old that DC didn't get to use. Among which was a new Young Justice including:

Chris Kent
Iris West
Sin
Lian Harper

In all seriousness it's actually a well-written fanfic that you should check out SpaceBattles. A crackfic, but one of the most well-written I've ever seen.

On one hand, that is a good team.

On the other, I've pretty much hated everything Spencer's written that wasn't Jimmy Olsen, so I wonder if it was probably for the best.

Is it? By my count, we've got roughly equal numbers of males/females, which is nice. We've got one Hispanic character and one African-American character. I guess there's M'gann, but I'm reluctant to count alien species for purposes of diversity from an out of universe perspective. And I guess Damian is of some sort of Asian/Arabic background on his mother's side. (Wherever the hell Ra's is originally from. Turkic, maybe?) So I guess that's not too bad, actually, when I write it out.

Well they have a ratio of more girls to boys, that's a start, and in addition to what you already said Iris is half-Korean via her mum. So discounting Kara because she's an alien, there is technically only one white person on the team. :)

And Ra's is North African, but for some reason they said that the Sensei is his dad, meaning that he might be half-North African/Half-Japanese, making Talia 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 North African, 1/4 Arabic, and Damian even more diverse.

Well, having more females than males actually makes it less diverse, although more inclusive of traditionally underrepresented groups, which is also nice. /Pedant =p

And I didn't know that about Iris, not being familiar with her. What's her deal, is she from the future? Alternate timeline? Wally's kid? Is she actually a tiny and adorable speedster or is that just the perspective of this shot.

She's Wally's kid, along with her twin brother Jai. And yes, she is tiny and adorable. Think a superfast Molly Hayes.

It's more common for superhero teams to have a higher ratio of boys to girls or, more rarely, a gender neutral setting. For a superhero team that isn't specifically a "girl" team like the Birds of Prey, having a higher ratio of girls to boys isn't really a common thing.

Though the YJ cartoon became progressively better in its ratio of boys to girls as it progressed, capping off the first season with a ratio of four girls to three boys.

We have 4 women (M'gann, Kara, Steph, and Iris) and four people of color (Jaime, Damian, Iris, and Virgil). That's a hell of a lot better than the initial JL line up.
