Wait, so the only reason John Stewart got the ring was because Hal slipped in the tub and knocked himself out during an emergency, so the ring sought out a replacement?

No, this wasn't John's first appearance, this was just one time that he teamed up with the Justice League because Hal was knocked out. (Which is still a big deal, because I'm fairly sure that he was their first non-Caucasian member.)

This story also demonstrated John Stewart's ability to think laterally, something (at the time) he was better at than the more straightforward Hal.

I like how Green Lantern has the ability to create a forcefield around him that's absolutely impenetrable to almost any force in the universe, except 1) anything yellow (at least classically) and 2) bad plots.

Really, the best thing about Hal is his propensity to get hit on the head on a regular basis.

Who needed Parallax the Bug Monster? You can easily explain Hal going nuts as a result of all the head trauma he's gotten over the years.
