I guess since Superboy have raw genetic materials from John. That's why Superboy have DNA of clark and Lois mix in with a unknown third donor who could maybe be Lex in his body biology.
So...rather than being a direct clone of Superman with Lex Luthor's DNA used to fill in missing sequences as before, the New 52 Superboy is the clone of Superman and Lois' son from a possible future with an as of yet unknown third DNA strand used to stabilize him, possibly Luthor or maybe even Harvest himself. In other words, not only Scott Lobdell made Superboy's origin way more convoluted, he's also turned him into DC's version of Cable.
It's the kind of thing that feels like it'll get retconned or ignored as soon as the writer who introduced it is gone. It's just a needless complication of a relatively straightforward origin.
So I was flipping through this at the comic store today and was confused. And even reading it over again here, I'm still kind of confused. So I'm just gonna ignore all this cloning and alternate futures and whatnot and just go with my original reaction to the first scan, which was, "AWWWWWWWWW....look at the widdle Superbaby!"
So cute. And Krypto's face in that one panel is hilarious.
Basically, Kal-El and Lois have a kid. Then the kid dies (genetic problems of people of two different species and all that) the man who would later be known as harvest revives the kid and turns him into a bit of a tyrant and raises him as his son. Then one day, the illness that had been held back returns and harvest flees to the past (from the 30th century and the MetaHuman-Human conflict that he was helping to stoke) he then clones Jonathan Kent (the son) in order to do some experiments without harming "his son:" He also starts messing with Metahumans because he hates them. He one day things he has gotten what he needed and decides to kill the clone. Cue Superboy issue 1. (It has been a few hours since i read the issue
It was never going to be a fresh start. I really feel that the DCnU only exacerbated the problems that DC had. I wish it was but GL was still doing what it did before the reboot, and Batman was not changed and now there scrambling to fix it. Then there's Stormwatch....
... seeing the classic SB suit (why did they use THAT for 'evil' Jon when they could have gone with something like Black Zero) makes me want to collect the rest of his original series...
Shame Harvest pre-harvesting's referred to as a Colonel- the " Harvest's Captain Nate Adym, a fragment of Captain Atom " idea'd be an amusing complication to throw into this.
Ugh, just overly complicated and annoying, there was no reason to get rid of Connor's perfectly serviceable old origin to replace it with this. Strikes me as the kind of thing that will be quietly retconned in a few years and forgotten about. The only thing I like about this is the implication that the alternate future version of Lex Luthor is reformed, and even that is marred by his stupid XTREMELY XTREME facial scars.
A clone of Superman devised by a "mysterious semi-governmental agency" (aka The Cadmus Project) whose genetic material is spliced from Superman and the Director of Project Cadmus (please note no women in that) devised to be a replacement of Superman. He breaks out and at first calls himself Superman, but then when Superman returns he calls himself Superboy or "kid" He does not gain an actual name until 6 years after he is created and is so happy that he gets it that he starts to cry that he is actually a real boy. He is a bright and sunny hero with wicked sarcasm and occasional bits of melencoly.
Or the clone of Superman and Lex Luthor who is wracked by guilt and pain, goes by a completely different name of Conner Kent and is never called anything else. He has no fun, no sense of humor and no longer is really interested in the future.
So let me get this straight. Superboy is the clone of a revived baby from an alternate future of Clark and Lois and a spliced with a third set of DNA to stabilize his condition?
JESUS CHRIST, WHAT IS WITH THAT BABY ON THE FIRST PAGE.
I thought the first panel was bad, but the last panel? Come on now, I would like that professional cartoonists would be able to draw eyes that were LEVEL with each other.
So what's more depressing? Being cloned for the purpose of replacing Superman and being a manchurian agent to his archenemy who happens to be your other "father"? Or being cloned to be a guinea pig by an insane supervillain from the future with a hate-on for metahumans looking for a cure to fix his real "son's" genetic problems?
All the problems with Harvest's character aside, this does at least give him a semi-sympathetic motivation: he's a father trying to save his son (granted, in the worst and most convoluted way possible).
After years of "Hey, we changed thing up, aren't we cool?" from DC leaving me going, "No, you changed up the good part," I am finally saying, "Yeah. this is a great idea."
At least about where his DNA comes from. Harvest is terrible
It's weird that they'd change this now since I thought Geoff Johns was the one who revamped Superboy's previous origin story, and he's kind of a big deal at DC right now.
I mean, it's nice to know that Johns isn't slamming down anyone whose ideas contradict his own, but it's not really a great change that's being made.

And for this we sacrificed the nice, relatively straight-forward Connor Kent?
I mean, you'd DC would have taken the opportunity to -simplify- characters, not infinitely confuse them even more.

Clearly an early sign of his unstable genes. D:
