Because Lane thinks that as an independant operator he isn't beholden to governmental destrictions like Superman is, and if HE were Superman he'd be using the power in that way, meaning that he's judging Superman by the same warped standards as Bill did in the second Kill Bill film (ie Clark Kent is how Superman sees humanity, as clumsy, oafish and weak, and that the persona is intended to mock his adopted race)?

So why doesn't he just have Supersuperman ... become an independent operator?

Because he's a control freak who doesn't like the idea of people who are more powerful than him having that level of independance.

Kind of a case of "do as I say, not as I do".

Ok look I haven't read this book so I don't know why Superduperman is working for the army in the first place. I meant why can't he and his whole outfit go rogue and take out Sudanese warlords etc etc etc? If he has Superduperman on his side, who is going to stop him?

Actually if you read what he is saying to Superman, he suggests that they actually are taking out Sudanese dictators, while Superman just dreams of doing it. I just don't know how they have kept a giant flaming man running around Sudan a secret.

The western media's interest in such places generally only applies when something happens there involves westerners. Like how some British newspapers focused on British journalists being killed in the demonstrations in Egypt rather than the thousands of Egyptians the military was shooting, for example

Is this a serious answer, because I think a giant flaming flying man who has been overthrowing dictators since before Superman arrived would be pretty newsworthy.

And now I have a mental picture of a VERY camp version of Apollo from the Authority belting out showtunes in a bad falsetto as he swoops into the enemy stronghold...

Plus if he was taking orders from Lane, he wouldn't be an independant as he would still be taking orders from the General who is a member of US Army personnel.
