Following the furore over the Harley Quinn Try-Out Page, no less a person than Gail Simone sought to put forward an idea with a less controversial, more enjoyable, motif...

I've posted this response the Harley page suggestion on another thread, but I do like... it's a very Harley sort of scenario

Hmm. So many Dicks, so little time...

I like the second one, where he's actually in a tub of gelato -- nice little twist on the prompt. Although, in the fourth one down ("You can have ONE BITE!") he has great hair. Well, all right, I'll take all of them. Can I get those Dicks delivered? Holding back the very many dirty little puns that flood my mind; not only am I apparently twelve years old today, I seem to have become a a twelve year old boy.

I do feel slightyl guilty that my "Tribute to Don Newton artwork" icon is based on that particular image but then I look at it again and just go.... nah, it's fine.

And this is why, even though I don't like Gail simone's writing anymore (it has became wayyy too dark and depressing for my taste), I still think she is an awesome person :)

Eh, her first reaction was that she didn't get the problem, because Deadpool makes suicide jokes all the time, so what's the difference? A bunch of people had to explain it to her over twitter.

She didn't immediately get the problem, so she politely asked for clarification, she respectfully listened to people who explained what the problem was, she got it, and she started working to make things better.

My opinion of her is still extremely positive.

I feel like the problem was so apparent that failing to get it - and making the Deadpool comparison - was just frankly astonishing in and of itself, particularly coming from Gail Simone.

Also I don't really see how asking for fanart of Dick Grayson bathing is making things better re: naked Harley suicide attempt.

She, like the other creators I think, is coming to it knowing the sort of context that someone who has worked in the business picks up almost instinctively. Effectively, she's an insider looking out, those being asked to draw it are outsiders looking in.

And it's not making it better directly, it's too late for that and she has no input on what DC editorial put out there anyway, so it would be pointless to try.

Instead she's offering a less problematic subject matter to draw for those who might be put off by the DC idea, something silly for fun, for kicks.

Well that seems needlessly cynical.

To be clear, I don't believe that Simone has any obligation to do anything about this Harley Quinn controversy, or even that she necessarily ought to. Me, even though I get the problem, I don't find it that offensive. But it's another thing to say that she is just unable to do anything about it even if she wanted.

One of the people arguing against her Deadpool comparison on twitter was Mark Waid, noted comics creator. And look at, for example, some of the Harley Quinn fancomics that you yourself have posted, that feature Harley ranting about her writers, or putting someone else in her position. These serve as criticism, and as a form of public protest. And even if they don't make DC reconsider, they are an attempt to get DC to change, and the combined outcry against this has at least succeeded in making DC and Palmiotti address the issue and defend themselves against it.

It's strange that there's so many talented artists out there (judging from this tiny selection) and yet a lot of comics have the most mundane art. Who's not hiring these guys? I'mma lookin at'choo, DC!
