Cullen was interesting, until the muppet monster was revealed, then he just became boring. He went from guile hero who got by on his wits to a bland hulk which manifests his fear, and looks like a rejected muppet.
But he doesn't control the monster that's possessing him and it's not something he uses in fights most of the time (he didn't even consider using it against Apex)
So most of the time he's still just a guy who gets by with his knowledge and the insane training that his father put him through (which the flashbacks to and his descriptions of are pretty fun) and a few big guns
And I like the Glaratrox's design. It's a fucked up demon, it's not suppose to be pretty or even cool
Doesn't matter, the principles behind it are too similar to ignore (Man on the outside, holding a raging beast inside him). This one just happens to be pure evil, but the basic ideas of duality are still there and undermine what he was before. It creates a needless manifestation of actual emotional problems that actually manages to rob him of depth.
As an old Angel fan, I can't help but think of Conner, and for all the missteps, the mind-wipe thing was a great plot point to play with and I prayed for something similar here. But nope, lolmonster.
And I frakin' Love monsters. But this one just plain sucks.
To me the "Glaratrox" design is not pretty or cool. Or even frightening. It's laughable. If you are going to do a demon, one of a lovecraftian order especially, it needs to have aspects of its biology that actively defy expectations and disgust the reader. This monster is not like that at all. It's a muppet. It's two steps away from having a wire on one arm and a hand up its torso so the primary hand can operate the mouth in a flapping head motion. Really, the jaw to skull proportions are perfect for a muppet flapping head thing to occur. The torso is to heavy forward, leaving the back limbs to atrophy into basically non-entities. It's all front, no back. That' what's why I call the thing a muppet.
It's comical. It's a joke. Replace it's voice with that of Animal and the movement from "AWE INSPIRING BEAST" it attempts becomes complete comedy.
Let's look at it from another angle: are there aspects of it that can relate to the sources of its power (fear and anxiety in the host organism)? No. It's a devourer type monster. It's all mouth, and the flat teeth do not inspire fear. Nothing about it, from what I see, actually works to expand on what it's suppose to symbolize.
If it was an anxiety monster, it's mouth parts would probably be more mosquito like or involve multiple moving parts to increase tension. It would not be a wall of teeth, just as an example. It's color would also be more likely a sickly yellow. Large claws, those actually work, but the function and shape of them are just far too cartoonish to be the ''get the hooks in and never let go" sort of thing fear and anxiety can work with. The symbolism of the monster's design does not work with what it is written for it.
I've tried several angles on this guy and I just cannot view this thing as a legitimate monster, a threat or even interesting. It's a worthless, tacked on add on.
I mean, really, the early speculation on Bloodstone's "Other Secret" involved being told he'd have to kill Anachronism if he lost control. Compared to the Glaratox, that's far more interesting as it's actually about his character. The Glaratox, well, it's a parasite leaching off what could be a good idea and replacing it with flash, shock and shallowness.
You may be able to see more with it, and for that I commend you, but as it stands, for me, it's a failure.
"I gave away the magic, the powers are still intact" - As I remember it, to Brian that's pretty the same thing, since it's the magic he metabolises (after using the suit as a regulator for a while). It's why they were vaguely plausibly able to make his powers weaken away from Britain, because he was away from the source of his magic.
She's a great football player, but her boots also give her superpowers, to the point where as long as she's dribbling a ball, a rock or whatever, no one can touch her... which is what Captain Brian tells her to do in the even that their plan goes wrong, only for her to get killed when she instead tries to save him.
