This segment demonstrates why Norman Osborn is really a villain and a horrible father. He can claim that he is concerned for others and is just misunderstood or suffering from a split personality, but in truth Osborn is simply a sadistic and petty megalomaniac, who only cares for himself.
I always assumed that Osborn was genuinely having split personality issues, it's just that both "Norman" and "The Green Goblin" are sociopathic monsters to various extent. (the former just does it in a slightly more socially acceptable way)
You're right, of course. Norman Osborn has a genuine split-personality-problem (though the correct term is apparently multiple personality disorder). However, I didn't meant to say that he was faking his mental illness. I wanted to point out that Osborn is not a good man controlled by his evil side like Harvey Dent aka. Two Face, but that both his personalities are "sociopathic monsters."
I think at that point, they must have known or had it planned; Putting Norman in charge of the Thunderbolts was the first step toward that, after all, and Ellis' run didn't end too long before Secret Invasion began, I think?
The problem with Norman Osborn is that he has had stories that were not written by Warren Ellis. That is the most important problem with Norman Osborn at this time.
So, people who want to fight crime have no idea how the world works? What about men who dress up like goblins and want to take over the New York criminal underworld? Glass houses, Norman.
Not a bad scene. If Ellis had ever bothered to develop another character voice besides the one that he's been using for virtually his entire career, it could have been great.
