Wally & Barry proceed to run through time to track down the bullet that killed Orion; they eventually come out several weeks after they left, and Darkseid has taken Earth thanks to the Anti-Life equation.

You don't need money, don't take fame,
Don't need no credit card to ride this train,
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes,
But it might just save your life,
That's the power of love.

...Sorry, force of habit. (Note: Not sorry)

Unfortunately, Bart returned in the Legion of Three Worlds tie-in alongside Superboy, so we didn't get to see all four Flashes together until Flash: Rebirth.

The entire internet? Jeez, so now we know what killed Wally: a massive pornographic overdose.

I thought the same in Doctor Who when one of the first things a recovering injured Dalek does is download a copy of the Internet... "The poor bastard" I thought, "It's now got hold of all of wikipedia, which I'm sure will be useful, but it's also got every fic every written, every porn site, and every crackpot lunatic conspiracy theory... ALL AT THE SAME TIME!"

When it committed suicide a mere half hour later I can't say I was surprised.

I have to say, I think Final Crisis is one of my favorite DC events ever--perhaps favorite comics events. Yes, it's big and bold and damn near incomprehensible, but it gets all the characters right and it does actually have something to say and, despite the bleakness inside, it's one of the most hopeful stories I've read.

if it's incomprehensible how can you tell if it really gets the characters right?

Especially when it spends a ton of time with massive chunks of them as mind controlled puppets.

I don't hate Morrison's work but he's very low on my list of writers. Never a guy I go searching out

I love some of his work "Doom Patrol", "Animal Man", "Zenith", "All Star Superman", "We3", much of his X-Men run, but others leave me stone cold, most of his Batman run and his big DC "events".

When he's in the groove he's excellent, but sometimes IMHO he just skips a few tracks and I'm left wondering "Why is this enjoyable again?"

Final Crisis and I... we have a /weird/ relationship.

Like, it's the first big comic story arc I've ever read, and I read it in trade format, so instead of all the pacing issues people tend to talk about I got a very beautiful novel about the heroes of the DCU. And I personally like mythological themes and logic, you know? And it is, at the end of the day, this very positive, very non-GRIMDARK story about how the DCU stares down the face of Ultimate Evil and vanquishes it.

Then I read bluefall's excellent series of posts on Wonder Woman elsewhere on this site and, looking back, I do have to agree with its assessment - that Wonder Woman, one of my favourite characters ever, is given a rotten deal here. Superman gets to sing and Batman gets to shoot - where's Diana's moment of awesome?

It's been a long time since I last read Final Crisis, and memories blur into each other. Looking back, I guess I'd love it still, except for the bits about Wonder Woman.

What does Wonder Woman do? She wraps the in her lasso and purges the Anti Life Equation from every living being on the planet!

I have to agree. I thought bringing Hal back was a mistake, but bringing Barry back after 20+ years remains a pretty much incomprehensible decision to me.

There also seems to be some kind of jab at the comics following CoIE with the line 'you died, we never got over it', to me. It at least feels very fourth-wall-ish, in some ways, given I know a lot of fans didn't actually give a shit and were more interested in Wally.

Based on a rumour I've heard about another character, they'd have a perfect opportunity to reintroduce him in a few months.

Umm... hmmm... a certain high profile character having to go underground because of current events, and who may be resorting to finding new team-mates, which might lead (in my head at any rate) to there being a golden opportunity to introduce a couple of said characters old friends....

ooooh, I heard about "that" rumour too. Would be amazing if they go there but before that I'd like him to be introduced in main series.

Thanks for the heads up!

What I personally like about this scene, is seeing Jay, Barry and Wally in one room. It's always good to have Speedsters from different generations working together, because it emphasises a recurring theme that I believe runs through all Flash-related titles (no pun intended): family, passing the torch and holidng up a legacy!

As 'big events' go, I thought Final Crisis was one of the best. I'm not sure I enjoyed the sum more than the parts, but most of the parts were good. Character beats were on target and Morrison knew that I wanted to see heroes, whether it be Snapper Carr fighting the good fight or the extended Flash Family working together.

Since Barry was the first true Legacy Hero and since the one thing that really sets the Flashes apart is how often they work together, these scenes actually reminded me of how much this works...and how much I miss Wally.

This is not The Return of Barry Allen.

THIS is The Return of Barry Allen:

In my opinion, he should've stayed dead. Wally proved himself worthy of the mantle long before. DC only shoehorned him back because they have a hard on for the Silver Age.

On the bright side, we don't get to see what kind of bastardization would've happened to Wally in NuDC. I'm glad he went into a quiet retirement. He honestly has the closest thing to a solid beginning, middle, and end in terms of a character arc. He started as a teen sidekick, took over the mantle and overcame his mentor's shadow, got married, had kids, then quietly went away when his mentor returned.

If anything, Wally's arc is the closest we'll ever get to a satisfying ending for a character without killing them off.

"The Return of Barry Allen" arc states all reasons why Barry shouldn't have come back. It's still the best Flash story and one of the top notch Waid works. And that story is why Barry will never EVER top Wally; he'll never get that heartfelt character development.

And yes I also agree about the other statement, I feel like Wally already had a closure as a character. As a superhero, I think he had still a lot to do but as a person his book was over. While I'm bitter on his absence, I can deal with it for a while.

"Heh. I bet you did."

Right in the feels man. His proud smile, Jay's face...so much awesomeness in that little panel. Looking at this family reunion makes me realize how much of a lackluster nu52 Flash has been.

I finished The Return of Barry Allen months ago, and although Barry's still my favorite Flash, I now understand why people love Wally so much! That story made DCAU Wally look like, well, a cartoon character.

His entire character development's probably even fuller than Dick Grayson's: he's the ultimate sidekick who made good.
