Reminds me a little of an exchange in an old Legion of Superheroes comic where someone dies and a member of the team turns to the ratherspiritual Element Lad "I suppose this is where you say that 'Death is only the beginning'?" and Element Lad looks surprised as he answers "Why would I say that? Death is the bit in the middle" and doesn't elaborate further....
That actually makes a lot of sense, especially where this series is concerned. In fact when I think about it, a perfect example is also in one of my favorite stories from the series and it's the one about the Professor who met his end in the tale, yet is reunited with his wife. It was a beautiful, happy ending that I just loved.
I thought the whole "death is a key" thing was rather poignant, and seriously, once the last trade is out, I'm buying it. Joe Hill made a wonderful series, and I'm sad it's over.
They are doing a few more one-shots and the like, and they've hinted that they'll do more, just using the concept and not this particular set of characters.

"This is how you tell mature, layered stories. This is how you tell a story, period. This is how you write a villain. This is how you write a protagonist. This is how you write conflict. This is how you make people care about characters. This is how you write suspense. This is how you take a fantastic notion that could've just as easily been in a children's book series and make it "darker and edgier" since that's all you care about nowadays. This is how you balance grimdark with wonder and awe. In short, this is how you make one of greatest comic book stories in the last ten years, if not one of the greatest ever. I leave you in this room and implore to stay and read this series until you understand. If you don't want to be here, I won't keep you. But, at the very least, if you're going to continue your present course, here's how you do it RIGHT. Good day to you."
