Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell & Gone #1

"One of the great pleasures of my professional life is that Neil has been a friend and something of a mentor to me. He kind of took me under his wing after my first novel came out. Once upon a time he workshopped my pitches for the Doctor Who TV show. He's just very generous with his time and with his imagination. So it's been this tremendous professional pleasure for him to open the door to us and let us play in his sandbox for awhile. It's our goal to make the most of it and do something that's satisfying for readers that avoids the pitfalls of crossovers, like fan service as opposed to telling a story that has emotional weight and stakes." -- Joe Hill

Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell & Gone #1

“Without Sandman, I don’t know if there ever would’ve been a Locke & Key. Neil Gaiman’s stories taught Gabriel and me how to tell ours. The Sandman series is to comics what J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was to fantasy and maybe what Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was to rock & roll: it’s the Alpha & Omega of dark fantasy in this format. Neil dreamt up all the best toys, and what a thrill it’s been to play with them. Maybe the biggest surprise is how well, how naturally, these series lace together. It’s like they’ve always been waiting for each other.” —Joe Hill

Well this is something I didn’t expect. DC and IDW are doing a crossover between Locke & Key and the Sandman universe. There isn’t much information but Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez are at the helm.

Locke & Key trailer and poster

So after a decade of development and a failed pilot Locke & Key is finally getting a Netflix series.
I'm excited as in my opinion it's one of the best comics series around but also a little wary. I feel, like his dad, Joe Hill's stuff doesn't translate as well to the screen and a lot of the material in Locke & Key is stuff that only works on printed page. I.E. there was an entire issue that was a homage to Calvin and Hobbes illustrated in the style of the old comics.

As a bonus here's a small scene from #1 of the comics.

Locke & Key - Series Consideration
Jul. 5th, 2018 09:57 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Hey everyone. I'm way overdue on this. Depression, counseling, getting a new job, and an assortment of other life stuff got in the way. When I started this series, I wanted to have a new one every month on Wednesdays. So far, that hasn't happen.
Anyway, I finally finished up the next installment of Series Consideration. This time, I'm opening the doors on the Lovecraftian horror series, Locke & Key, by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.
As I said before, I'm still very new to making videos and editing. I still don't like my narration, honestly. It sounds dry and formal. Maybe you disagree. But I'd love to hear any feedback you have.

Locke & Key getting a Netflix show

Big news, after years of development hell and failed Fox pilot Netflix has picked up Locke & Key. More info here. If they do this right it could be great.
If you're not familiar with the comic this might give you an idea of what to expect:

If I had to recommend a comic to someone who doesn't read them it would have to be Locke & Key. I've posted it a few times here but for those who don't know it's a horror/fantasy series about a family who inherits an old house home to keys that unlock more than doors. It's written by Joe Hill; Hill is Stephen King's son and a novelist in his own right but I think his strength is in comics. I've mostly given up physical comics for digital but the exception is anything by Hill.
The entire series is currently available in a variety of different formats and trade editions. It's also going to be made into a series from Hulu from the director of the new version of 'It'.
Here's a small selection from #1.

Locke & Key on sale at Comixology

Technically, it's a Gabriel Rodriguez sale but the main selling point is the entire series of 'Locke & Key' for 99 cents an issue. The sale is available here. I've sang its praises here numerous times but it's still in my opinion of the best modern comics series around.
Here is the most recent issue, 'Small World', which I posted here way back in January.

Something I thought that might be of interest is Audible has released a full-cast (over fifty actors/actresses) dramatization of Locke & Key. It's free for the entire month of October and can be downloaded here.
As far as I can tell (it's over thirteen hours long) it covers the entire series.
For those not familiar with the series it's sort of hard to explain without spoilers but here's a tease... a family inherits an old mansion where certain keys can unlock doors and, well... here's a small selection from #1.
