Daredevil #1.50

These are two pages from Bendis and Maleev's back up story from Daredevil #1.50. Their run on Daredevil is easily one of my favorite comic stories of all time and seeing them together again was the main reason why I picked up this issue. I'll admit to being a little disappointed given how brief it is and how different it is from the style of their earlier run but it was interesting to see them try something new in presentation. Without further ado...

The story is told from the perspective of Stana Morgan to an unknown person. She begins by saying that she is married to Matt Murdock, who is secretly Daredevil. "You need to know this. You, specifically."

She tells how Daredevil foiled a bank robbery from the Owl at the bank she worked in, and how they later fell in love.

Bendis often does "a character realizes his/her best friends are judgmental pricks" a little too often.

Also, I know Marvel often does "the superhero's girlfriend is murdered because that's what happens" often enough, but how would Jeannie know that? As readers we know that happens, but I don't think the general public of the Marvel Universe is aware of that. Sure, they know its possible, but not a (forgive the pun) dead certainty.

Though given Matt's mortality rate of friends and lovers, on this rare occasion I almost feel the "best friend" of Stana's has a point... almost.

Did... Did Bendis just retcon in another dead girlfriend/wife for Daredevil in a single issue?

Geez, so much for creating an era of Daredevil designed to specifically move away from stories meant to make you demand a stiff drink afterwards.

It's an out of continuity story in an anniversary issue for the character. Bendis and Maleev are arguably the most favoured team prior to Waid and since Miller, so they put together a short story.

I can't help but read Bullseye's expression on the last page as a kind of frustration.

" Another one to do? Jesus, you'd think he'd be tired of it by now- I know I am! "
