When last we left our adorkable heroine, she had discovered she has shape-changing powers, leaving her confused and a little frightened.

Kamala goes with Nakia to the Circle Q, but since Bruno is working there, she runs off to avoid seeing him. The next day at school, Kamala's Google powers are still failing her.

Her other powers start to flare up, and she runs into a locker room to hide while trying to suppress them.

Oh, Kamala.

Speaking of which, are there any superhero academies that teach lessons on how to come up with plausible lies on the spot to keep your identity a secret?

Anyway. After detention, Kamala decides to visit Bruno at the Circle Q to talk to him... and sees him getting held up by a masked robber wielding a gun. She decides to do the superhero thing, and uses her super-strength to scare the robber. Unfortunately, she finds that being super-strong does not make her invulnerable.

Apparently "Marvel Universe Web MD" and "Marvel Universe Google" are still unaware of Inhumans despite the mist being at the beginning of the weekend and #3 being set after the weekend.

(#2 reveals that #1 took place about twelve hours after "the Terrigen Bomb", meaning after Infinity #4, with both comics taking place and concluding on a Friday night, and presumably the Coles Academic High School and onward scenes are set on the Monday immediately following.)

Is the general public aware of the Terrigen bomb in the first place? They'll know the effects perhaps, but won't have a clue what caused it, especially so soon after the "New mutat wave" thingie hit and caused humans to become good old fashioned mutants on the spot across the globe.

I think Medusa announced the existence of Inhumans and the Terrigen mist cloud in the latest issue of Inhumans*. So the general public may not be aware at the point Ms. Marvel is currently at but eventually she'll find out what she is now.

*I saw a scan of her doing it when I found out Soule was writing Inhumans.

Reactions have already started in this series, I think. On the page mentioned but not posted where Kamala and Nakia hit up the Circle Q after skipping out of the mosque, there's a dude outside the store holding up a "FEAR THE MIST" placard.

Awareness of the mist was obvious -- heck, I think it was noticed as early as it happened, complete with someone possibly tweeting while engulfed in -- but for me it's a question of "how many in Jersey City are aware of it being THE Terrigen Mist"... although the "Fluffington Post" story involving a "Dr. Schnoz" story, if the former isn't just a local paper/site, suggests that ignorance of what the Terrigen Mist actually is is more widespread...

I love Sheik Abdullah's expression when he realises that Sister Kamala is with them today.

The universal look of the teacher who's day just got a lot more challenging, regardless of their creed, colour or political affiliation.

I love how her brother's mouth is slack open.

That's the look of a big brother whose younger sibling is about to totally embarrass him.

Which is of course, the cardinal joy of younger siblings the world over, especially if they can do it with legitimate, "innocent" questions.

Not that I've ever done such a thing of course! ;)

Some things are just universal constants... and that would be one. There are probably sentient slime-molds somewhere that manage to look exactly like that when that one student turns up!

Just to reiterate:

This is a comic book series from a major publisher that stars a teenage Pakistani-American Muslin girl as the lead. And has scenes set in a mosque (okay a tiny bit unclear as to the proper term here). With characters of assorted levels of faith. Played both seriously and for respectful laughs.

This book is seriously too awesome to exist. I love it.

So, lessee - the kid with the raging crush on Kamala has invented a "psychokinetic polymer fabric"? And he's with her when she gets shot?

Odds on these two factoids intersecting?

Mild spoiler

It's not the source of her second costume*, at least. As seen in #2, #3, and #4 she seems to be able to 'shapeshift' her regular clothing enough that she doesn't actually need the biokinetic polymer... although it makes already-flexible stuff moreso.

(Also, the rest of her Infinite comic, in All-New Marvel NOW! Point One #1, has her changing into a different dress instead of just shape-shifting from her superhero outfit.)

* Her first costume is a one-scene WONDER.

In #4 she wears something close to her final look, and it's built around the Burkini modesty swimsuit "you swore you'd never wear," according to Ammi. ("It's for a project!")

The very fact that she went straight for the burkini -- I wonder if that's an intentional commentary on the infamous tradition of leotards and bikinis as superheroine outfits, in the sense that they were so the 'expected norm' even in-universe that Kamala internalized it.

I just love Alphona's depiction of body language. The various levels of bored seen in the teenagers at the mosque are so spot on.

I wish smartphones were around when I was a teenager bored out of mind listening to a sexist Imam's lectures in mosques. I played a lot of Snake instead in those Nokia days.

Some items I'd point to

Date: 2014-05-30 04:38 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] chortles81
Are how Alphona juxtaposes first the girls' boredom to sharply contrast with Nakia (and not Kamala) at the center of the panel sitting up and attentively -- then pairs the "Nakia and Kamala's talking" with the reveal of the partition, though people had to actually look for it to notice! -- and then under those depicts the boys/guys sitting in a semi-circle seemingly attentively (or at least Aamir and the other guy with glasses). Quality writer's instruction-to-artist at work!

A nice other thing about the writing is that Wilson's presented Nakia's demeanor and dialogue (with the help of Alphona's depictions of her expressions) in the first issue in such a way that, when Kamala asks about what Sheikh Abdullah previously said, I could hear and see Nakia scoffing and rolling her eyes as she muttered "Don't bother, Kamala."

To be honest I initially picked the book mostly for Alphona's art. But I am honestly liking how everthing as a whole is turning out.
By the way did anybody notice the "fair and lovely" spoof in one of the backgrounds? (When Kamala and Nakia are walking in direction to circle Q, says "fair and pasty")
