Based on Land of the Dead, I'm pretty sure that doing "sentient zombies" is the last refuge of a zombie story that has well and truly run out of steam. So there's that.
Aye, I quite liked it too, but it did have some major faults and coulda been done a lot better. The "Zombie Sentience" thing however has been around since Day of the Dead with Bub, which in my opinion is the most underrated zombie movie ever made and one of my personal favourites.
Honestly, with regards to the idea being "the last refuge of a zombie story that has well and truly run out of steam" I have to disagree. In all the movie franchises I have seen where the idea is raised it is either part of the series to begin with (i.e. return of the living dead) or evolves naturally from the series' progress (i.e. the Romero Dead trilogy)
I'm liking the take in the Japanese zombie manga "I am a hero". Spoilers: ⋮ ⋮ ⋮ ⋮ ⋮ The zombies seem to be telepathically connected, and are all heading in the same direction to merge into human-centipede-like abominations (attacking and converting all living humans along the way; the zombies have low intelligence but are very fast, nimble and vicious). A few rare characters became 'half-zombies' for unknown reasons, fading in and out of a zombish state, which gave us insight into the situation ("I didn't feel alone anymore").
