This is exactly the reply I'd expect from a guy who named himself after "Tolkien's ultimate villain."

Dr. Karl Lykos: Tolkien fanboy.

And even then got it wrong, Sauron wasn't the ultimate villain in Tolkein, that would be Melkor.

True, but at the time of writing -- Lykos named himself Sauron in X-Men vol.01:no.60 (September 1969) -- The Silmarillion had not yet been published. That was released September 1977, eight years later.

I'm imagining him eagerly buying a copy from the first print run (or maybe stealing it, he's a supervillain), huge Tolkein fan that he apparently is, reading, reading, reading... "Son of a--!"

And then some would-be supervillain in Dubuque who tries to rob banks with a Silly Putty gun calls himself Melkor. Sauron rips up the paper and stomps out, ignoring Barbarus saying, "Um, I hadn't done the crossword yet..."

I want a crossover between this and Atomic Robo immediately.

Atomic Robo: So wait.... he has a machine that can rewrite DNA, and he's using it to turn people....

Spidey: Into Dinosaurs yest. I've already been over this with him.

Dr. Dinosaur: I'm actually mad I didn't think of this myself.

Spidey: Wait, there's two of them?

Atomic Robo: Apparently.

Someone should point out to him just how much money he could make selling that tech... and suggest he could buy himself an island for his saurian converts... and then point out there are forums full of people who'd want to be dinosaurs.

but then again... where's the fun in that?

I wonder how many Marvel characters could cure cancer but decide to withhold the cure. Black Panther, Norman Osborn... am I missing anyone? Could Reed Richards do it?

Reed really doesn't do bio-science much, so I doubt it.

Hm, I suspect Apocalypse or Sinister may be able to, but, y'know, it's not their thing.

The X-men have some bio scientists- Beast, Rao, Dr. Nemesis- but they actually would use it to cure cancer if they could. Which makes it odd that they don't have the cure but dabblers like Panther and Osborn do.

It's not that Panther himself developed the cure, he's just the head of the government in charge of the super-science division that did. As for Osborn, well, I wouldn't be surprised if he stumbled onto a cancer cure, but I'd worry about the side effects. I mean, on the face of it, his goblin serum is some great super-soldier stuff--but again, the side effects.

Okay, so a highly-specific cure for the cancer of one person with very unusual circumstances. Not the same as a blanket cure-all.

I don't know. Reed and a bunch of the other MU scientists have basically just been slapped with a 'SCIENCE' label so broad they basically cover any number of disciplines.

Put it this way - if you can create a working duplicate of a freaking THUNDER GOD? You can probably cure cancer.

q99: (Default)
From: [personal profile] q99
Sure, most of the scientists are omnidiscipline, but they still have specialties.

And Clor was three of 'em working together- Pym, Stark, and Reed. Pym does a reasonable amount of biology related stuff, so one good in that area and two who dabble.

They'd probably have to work together on the cancer thing too.

Which still raises the question of why they haven't.

You could still use Extremis on it's own, for instance - or the liquid armour from the latter part of Fraction's run - and program that to eliminate cancer, nip any remissions in the bud, and basically fill in what removing the cancer loses.

We've never heard back on the cures for cancer the science types came up with during the "Death of Captain Marvel" story. As far as we know, those are still in FDA trials somewhere.

It's Marvel-world, most folks in it are such assholes they'd probably turn down a cure for cancer if it came from a super-powered source. Come to that, they'd probably attack a super-powered individual who had the cure for cancer just the same as one who turns people into dinosaurs.

Guy who turns people into dinosaurs would be way more accepted. Start a special effects studio, put dinosaurs in all the movies, make money for as long as kids like dinosaurs (so, forever). A cancer cure? One treatment and they're better? Pff, where's the money in that?

I think that my only issue with it, is that the writer doesn't seem to have realized one thing. Peter is actually a pretty good teacher; (or he was before OMD and before Slott started writing him)

If there is one character in the MU, who would actually do quite well, teaching a class of mutant kids, it would be him.
