Isn't "paternal" father and "maternal" mother kinda redundant? I thought they were only used one more generation distant.

well, Mystique is theorically capable of impregnating someone... "paternal Mother" is actually not outside the realm of possibilities here...

yes, yes and i think no because she keeps identifying herself with her birth gender and transform into her birth gender most of the time.

Oh right, identity. That. Well, thinking about Mystique's physiology is certainly threatening to ruin my childhood so I think that will be enough of that.

Kind of specific case. So unless Tony's DNA-analysis made him suspect that either Happy or the mother was Mystique, or Loki, then it just doesn't apply here.

or any other shapeshifter/magic-user/parallel universe counterpart that there could be. In fact, i am sure there would be spells that would make Happy the maternal father...hell, i think Tony probably invented something that would make Happy pregnant.

but it COULD apply, and as such, the option has to be considered. he did not know who the father or mother was and the machine was designed to detect them.
