DAREDEVIL #-1: When Matt met Foggy

Back in 1997, Marvel did Flashback Month, where various titles were given #-1 issues, all set some time before the fateful rocket flight that created the Fantastic Four. Artist Gene Colan and writer Joe Kelly wrote of Matt Murdock's arrival at college and when he first met Foggy Nelson.







Stan Lee narrates all the Flashback tales, sometimes even appearing in the story.



Frank Miller's MAN WITHOUT FEAR miniseries, the 2003 Daredevil movie, and the Netflix DAREDEVIL series all had Matt as 12 or 13 when his father was murdered. Kelly and Colan are going "old school" in this case.



"Freakin' State" should not be confused with Empire State University, alma mater of Reed Richards, Ben Grimm and Peter Parker.

Time for the big "welcome freshmen" speech.





Matt did become valedictorian.

It has to be frustrating that Jack keeps switching from "Matt can do anything and everything" to "Matt is a delicate flower who has to be protected from the big bad world."

How will the school computer pairs up Matt in the roommate department! Well, "M" and "N" are next to each other in the alphabet.





Karl Kesel revealed that Foggy was from a wealthy family and his parents ignored him. Rosalind Sharpe, Foggy's mom, hired Foggy and Matt as part of her firm during the late 90's era.



When some drunk "hicks" start something at a nearby restaurant, Matt is able to handle himself, much to his father's amazement. Still nothing about the enhanced senses, but Jack sees that Matt won't let anyone mess with him. Calling his son a regular "man without fear," Jack goes home certain that Matt will be all right.

I always thought Jack died when Matt was much younger

In the movie he did, but in the comics Matt was late teens at least.

I like it better this way. This was a great story.

The Daredevil series on Netflix also has Jack dying when Matt was a little kid. I only make mention of this because it's rather popular, so more people are going to know DD through it than the movie.

I really liked this comic, though I think it puts Foggy a bit high up the socioeconomic scale from what else we've seen of his (well-off but not chaffeur-driven) family!
