"I went back and re-read those issues and remembered Kole had asked one of the other characters a question that when answered would have been extremely controversial at the time. For various reasons, that storyline went in a different direction, so I never had the chance to explore it, but now I could. So we see Kole pretty much asking the very same question, but now we get an answer. It may not be as controversial as it would have been in 1984, and I decided not to do something different just because I could, so because of the nature of Convergence, I got the chance to do the story the way I originally wanted." - Marv Wolfman

Jeez! We all know Dick has a shapely rear end, but THAT is one shapely rear end!

I'm not even sure I know what the question is. Is that Joey might be gay? Based on the sheer number of mutually happy (indeed ecstatic based on the usual female side of the conversation) hetero relationships he had (when Wolfman was writing the title) not really seeing a reveal that he's been gay all along being particularly convincing.

If it's that he's bisexual, then fair enough, but I don't get much of an impression of that here, he suddenly seems anti-girl.. rather than pro-everyone.

I thought making Joey straight was a purposeful choice. I thought they didn't want to play into the whole "sensitive guy who likes art" must be gay stereotype. I could have sworn they actually said that in an interview somewhere.

I remember that as well though I seem to recall they said it was originally the plan for Joey to be gay but one of the reasons they changed their mind was because of how stereotypical it would be.

I guess here Wolfman is saying the potential controversy also played a role.

In the previous issue, Kole asks Donna, "He does like women, doesn't he?"

Which would probably resulted in peals of genuine laughter from Donna as, based on all available evidence, to say that Joey was, at the very least, a flaming heterosexual with a delightfully active sex life would be a significant understatement,

As sweet as that scene was with Joey and Kole I'm also left wondering how that fits into everything else Wolfman wrote with Joey (like was he just in deep denial? Hard when you're close friends with an empath. And hinted at having a thing for said empath. Or was there something creepy like the Azarath souls influencing him? Ugh don't want to go there. Joey realized he was bi/pan/fluid? Mulitiverse thing? ). And yeah, missed opportunity to add to what he already wrote and make Joey bi or pan which reminds me how this was around during Iceman's less carefully handled outing and they both have that in common at least.

Really, when Wolfman was making it obvious Joey liked girls the Joey/Dick moments were still not subtle at all. Hell, I always saw Joey as bi for years and shipped him hard with Raven as much as Dick. I'm guessing Wolfman had this mini-series to do and it be a more accepting time he dusted off this plotline and just wanted to do it. Part of me is a little surprised DC let Wolfman do this story if only because it looks like they treated a (still possibly?) gay character like complete shit for nearly a decade. Really they let Joey be ignored by loved ones, his disability erased, turned into a mentally unstable terrorist, and when they had a chance to get a fresh start with his character they went and a gave him to Liefeld... Wonder if they'll even add this to NuJoey even or just ignore it.

Always remember that Joey's idea of demonstrating his powers to Dick (Who had just put on his spiffy, bare chested Discowing outfit for the first time) was to stare deep into his eyes to make >>CONTACT!<< and then make him perform a little dance... I'm not going to say that Joey would have taken the opportunity for some slightly excessive booty-shaking just for fun, but let's not rule out that delightful possibility

Oh no! Never rule that out! And never forget the time Dick actually said "Joey, get in me!" In reference to Joey possessing him in battle of course.

Are the other Teen Titans from Armageddon 2001? Are there any Armageddon 2001 teams in Convergence?

This was the Doom Patrol of Earth-Tangent.
Y'know, I think even DC decided to overlook Armageddon 2001 during Convergence. Can't say I blame them.

Makes sense that they wouldn't include it. I mean the actual time line where Monarch won would have to have whatever city he was in captured cause otherwise no heroes or villains to use as champions.

And how could they choose from the sheer amount of alternate worlds we saw in the annuals.
