Themyscira is an island populated entirely by women, and as you can see, they freely admit to most of them engaging in same-sex relationships:

I can´t help but wonder if "the way of Narcissus" is a fancy word for masturbation. Either way, as I read my way through the post-Crisis Wonder Woman series, I can´t help but wonder why I´ve yet to see any physical expressions of love between the amazons, the hetero couples are certainly showing their affection for each other. Is it that while acknowledging the existence of girl-on-girl sex on Themyscira, the censorship or DCs editors of the time forbade any actual displays of same-sex interaction? I tracked down the Perez run and began reading, trying to see if I could find any open displays of amazon love, and it didn´t take many issues before I stopped to wonder:

Dianas face and thoughts here made me think "love at first sight?", but as I thought about it, I assumed she was just taken aback by seeing the first non-adult woman in her life. Then later on came this scene, that seemed to suggest Hippolyte and Phillipus had a thing going:

As I pondered this, I found myself rooting for them, because as I thought about it, I thought them to be a very romantic pairing; strongly devoted to each other, but even more devoted to their respective duties, Hippolyte wanting to save her daughter and Phillipus fighting to defend Themyscira, those duties sometimes causing them to physically face each other in combat, as had been the case here. But then, just a few pages later, Hippolyte shared a deep kiss with Heracles, pretty much crushing my dreams of the two of them. Had I once again been cheated out of a lesbian couple on Themyscira? For a while, yes, but then came this scene some issues later:

Now is it common for the amazons of Themyscira to sleep in double beds, or is that Menalippes amazon lover sleeping next to her? Having been cheated in the past, I decided on the former, but then this exchange came later:

Now the amazons are throwing declarations of love around freely, but calling somebody "my beloved" seems more than just friendly. And not many issues later, Hippolyte makes a remark that suggests at the least a close bond between Menalippe and Penelope:

So perhaps I had finally found my lesbian amazon couple? As I continue reading, I can only hope I will find my answer, and find more pairings in the process. If you know of any moments I haven´t listed here, do tell me, in the meantime, here´s a scene that made me move in for a closer look, to decipher whether that was just a cheek kiss shown from an awkward angle, or if Diana and Hippolyte really, *REALLY* likes each other.

Oh great...

Date: 2009-07-05 03:03 pm (UTC)The problem with the images is that you are using the address for the imageshack pages the images are on (i.e. http://img339.imageshack.us/i/ww38.jpg/ ) whereas you need to use the address for the images (i.e, http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9748/ww38.jpg ).

Date: 2009-07-05 03:12 pm (UTC)Given that Narcissus is the literal epitome of "self love", I think that's EXACTLY what it means.
