This is bad when, unlike some cases with the police, the specific heroes have been very public and active for a long time without misusing their power.

People fear cops who *do* beat and kill civilians. They don't fear ones that they know have a long and positive record.

I'd also point out that as celebs, superheroes have something on their side that 99% of cops don't have, recognizably.

For someone reasonably informed, there's no mistaking Blue Beetle for Superman or Plastic Man, etc.

A cop under investigation looks the same as one who's won a medal of valor. Unless you know a cop personally, you don't know them at all.
