Star Wars: Princess Leia by Mark Waid and the Dodsons is pretty good. It has the same sort of tone and fits in with the world of the books while Leia remains Leia.

When Princess Leia Organa was captured by the Empire, she never betrayed her convictions - even after the complete destruction of her home world, Alderaan. When her rescue came, Leia grabbed a blaster and joined the fight, escaping back to the Rebel Alliance and helping strike the biggest blow against the Empire - the destruction of the Death Star! But in the aftermath of that victory, the question remains... what is a princess without a world? As Leia comes to grips with her loss, a new mission leads her to the underground world of Sullust.

The series starts straight after the medal ceremony at the end of A New Hope

Did that set off anybody else's gaydar?

The rest of the series is about Leia finding a mission for herself, reuniting the Alderaan diaspora. I might post some more of the highlights, such as this

That bounty is for her dead? I would have thought they'd want her alive.

Consider it a mark of respect -- they know that she's not going to let herself be taken alive again, after what Vader did to her.

Yeah, that was one of the weakest elements of A New Hope, if I'm being entirely honest; the only real sense of loss is that of Obi-Wan... Who proceeds to stick around as a Force Ghost anyway. Meanwhile, the destruction of Alderaan and the murder of Luke's Aunt and Uncle (complete with pretty grisly, horrific corpses for light 70's sci-fi) seem pretty glossed over. While this isn't quite as good as say, Vader's series, to me, it's still pretty solid and deals with some of that stuff from IV.

The characters just seem off in this series - like the words they say just don't sound right coming from the characters at times, like Luke calling Leia "Princess". He never called her that, that was always Han's thing.

Well it was a formal setting, and Luke was kinda unsure of the etiquette at this point I think, he's saying it sincerely without the barb that Han puts on it.

Yeah, that was the impression I got too. I mean at that point they haven't really known each other that long and he's sort of been dropped into everything.

Don't know about the gaydar bit (is that woman pilot even somone otherwise known from the film canon or the EU?), but I did find the sexual/romantic tension between Luke and Leia amusing and poignant, given the reveal we know is waiting for them in their future.

She's an Alderanian character new to this series who teams up with Leia and busts her out.

She can't let go of formality around Leia... as seen in this earlier post:

Thanks for the link. That scene does give the lesyay-inclined a little more ammunition. :-)
