Ok, seriously though, they established last issue that the creeping threat is a smoke monster that possesses the wildlife. So by their philosophy, shouldn't they have spent the past three months researching this smoke monster and trying to understand what its deal is, as opposed to training a small child to do battle?
Also: Alcippe teaches Diana this whole lesson about how the mares aren't inherently dangerous, and can even be befriended and ridden by humans. But she describes it as respecting opponents, understanding opposition, capturing foes. But these horses aren't their enemy! For wildlife, they are actually really friendly towards humans! She's teaching Diana about respecting nature and it's still all about battle! What the hell!? Why is she making everything about fighting!?
Well, she is an Amazon, and (assuming she holds the same position in this continuity) the captain of the guards and second-in-command leader of the army. Fighting is kinda her thing.
She just gives it some meat and it bows to her and lets her ride it it's not an enemy at all!! She is teaching a worldview where basically everything is an enemy, it's just that some enemies you make friends with. Seriously, what the hell.
Like a soldier goes to her pet doberman and goes, 'you can be a dangerous enemy when attacked, but I respect you, my opponent, and I would only kill you when absolutely necessary. Fortunately, my understanding of you is a weapon has allowed me to take you captive.'
It's a training exercise for Diana, not an actual battle scenario.
Alcippe is teaching Diana not to make the assumption that because something CAN be dangerous it always WILL be dangerous, which seems entirely in keeping with the Amazon philosphy of fighting only when you have to.
Her initial instructions were to capture it, not attack it, so it's reactions to Diana with a spear would be different to those of Alcippe with a slab of meat.
So the lesson should be: not everything is your enemy. Her lesson to Diana is that the mares are not actually dangerous to humans and she should understand and respect them. This would be a good lesson.
But then Alcippe keeps calling them enemies and foes and opponents! They were never enemies at all, their reaction to a spear was to run away! They're all making friends and there's no enemies or fighting going on at all, but Alcippe is still talking about capturing them and predicting your opponents in battle! What the hell!
