"I didn’t (and never) want to just ape someone else’s approach. What’s the point of that? I’d rather go down in flames for doing something I believed in, that was mine, than coast along by relying on the goodwill generated by another writer’s take. I LOVE Waid’s Daredevil. I’ve read that first issue over and over again – it’s perfect. But there’s more than one kind of DD – that’s part of the beauty of the character. So, I knew almost from the start that I would go a bit darker, a bit weirder." - Charles Soule

why is it that comic book writers always seem to think that going dark is 'new and original?'

(though I do like the idea of Matt giving the new guy a way to contact Night Nurse. (that is where he's sending him to, right?)

Yeah, I think it is. It's weird they stuck with Linda rather Claire since she's in the show, but it's definitely awesome to see a Night Nurse.

Bendis had already established that it was Night Nurse who ran the underground medical facility for street-level superheroes who need privacy.

And before.

Claire wasn't all that involved with super heroes until age got the spotlight in the Netflix shows too.

It's annoying, I'll admit, but it's better than 'Dark, and I hope good and original as well', ya know?

Couldn't someone just as simply ask why would comic book writers think going light is 'new and original'? Especially since isn't Soule's comment directly in response to Waid's run?

Also, to expand on my question. Isn't this a story that has Matt work a DA and has a sidekick he is training? Also know as things new and innovative to the DD mythology?

I mean for Daredevil it's not original, it's just going back to basics. To be fair Daredevils overall prefer this anyways.

I sort of wish they'd held off from mentioning Kristen at all. This is pretty much a Daredevil reboot in terms of where he is as a character so it'd be nice to just leave Waid's take on him out there in the multiverse.

that and like you said above, they could have taken the opportunity to bring in Claire, whom many of the readers know and like from the series.

Linda was already established to be the one that runs the underground hospital for Super Heroes. Plus Comics!Claire isn't like the one from the show and she doesn't have much history with comics!Matt.

Besides, Claire has showed up elsewhere anyway.

Well, the conceit is that Matt actually created his own, in-universe relaunch, by making everyone except Foggy forget DareDevil's identity. Foggy is seriously pissed off about it and Matt is eaten up by guilt about it. Since that's a direct continuation from Waid's run, I'd certainly be wondering what happened to Kristen if it didn't get mentioned.

Since things were spiraling out of control with Matt's identity out there, there's a plausible reason for him to want to undo that, and more of his reasoning will probably be revealed as we go on. Just how he made all this happen is the mystery hanging over the storyline. I think it's an interesting take and a pretty good job of maintaining continuity while shifting the tone of the book.

Except it's not a reboot and it is a continuation. People wanted to know what happened to Kristen.

All things considered, this isn't TOO dark. The artwork is, but not Matt's personality.

Agreed, I've actually been a little surprised by how pulpy the pages I've seen are. It's certainly more straight faced and less brightly colored than the previous run, but the story is about a bunch of ninjas at war with a cult led by a rogue ninja, which is hardly on the same level of gritty as Karen Paige: Heroin Addict was.

Waid's run was the first time I'd cared about Daredevil since... ah, before Frank Millar, really.

Seoule also proved more than capable of aping Waid's Daredevil during Matt's She-Hulk appearances.

That being said, I am liking what I've seen here. Though I'm not a terrible fan of the "made everyone forget your secret ID trope." Didn't like it when Wally did it, didn't like it when Tony did it, (accepted it when Peter did it, but only because that was too big a horse to have let out of the barn). But at least they're teasing all the guilt and drama out of it that should be associated with such a choice. They also really didn't have a lot of choice, I suppose, given how much of a joke Matt having a secret ID had become by the point he just gave up on it entirely.
