I've been disconnected for a couple of years so I'm not caught up (and when will we get Eli back)

Yup. She even has practically the same costume as her MC2 counterpart.

I wonder if this was part of the planned long arc in the first place, or if Nick Spencer is trying to make up for his abysmal treatment of Cassie Lang in that first arc. In any case, though that first arc still sucks, I'm intrigued by what we see here.

Peter Parker and Ben Grimm would like to give up their powers, but they know there are too many threats to do so. Spider-Man and the Thing will always be needed to stop those threats.

With Cassie... It seems like she's just bored not being superpowered any more.

Completely different circumstances. Peter Parker and Ben Grimm were victims of circumstance, accidents. Cassie never wanted to give up her powers or have a normal life. She stole them in the first place because she wanted to be a hero, she chose this life and went in eyes wide open.

And then her powers were taken from her. Her heart was literally stolen from her.

You had me until the stolen heart part (I really disliked the storyline where Hush cuts out Catwoman's heart for the same reason). I wish writers would realize that putting hearts in and out of bodies and expecting everything to be hunky dory so quick is not the way the world works even in universes like the DCU or M616. Also the fact it usually happens to women can't be ignored either.

On the other hand the basics of this story is a better set-up that DC gave Mary Marvel in Countdown where apparently feeling bad about losing powers and coming out of coma is enough to turn a level-headed, bright and all-loving idealistic hero, into a bratty, idiotic short leather skirt wearing quasi-villain.

I would akin Cassie to someone who always wanted to be a cop or firemen. Then they found out they could no longer do it, due to circumstances out of control

Cassie wanted powers and wanted this life. It's like making a kid actor , who acted for years, and then taking away their chances to be an actor, just because.
