For the record, I can't take credit for noticing this--Zarius on the SpidermanCrawlSpace messageboard found it.

In the latest ASM Annual, there's a scene where some new character wants revenge on 'Ben Reilly' for killing his family. Ben's name brings back memories to Pete, and we get this montage of poorly scanned panels and covers from the Clone Saga. Here's one of them:

Here's the source, from Spider-Man: The Lost Years #2...

So in other words...when Pete thinks he's remembering him and MJ, he's in fact remembering Ben Reilly and Janine.

Hardly the end of the world, but at the same time, I don't see how anyone could look at the original issue (and they had to to get the pic) and think that they're Pete and MJ. Unless they just skimmed through all the Clone Saga issues and just pasted on the pictures that seemed appropriate, which is what they were probably doing.

Maybe current Pete is Ben, put in his place as some sort of demonic catch in his bargain with the devil?

Anything that turns OMD/BND into a swerve, I'm all for it. I'll even take back all the nasty things I've thought and said about the current marvel regime.

Because if this was all a plot to fool us "smart marks" and get genuine heat from us, to set up the payoff of setting everything right... then it's more than just ok. It's fucking brilliant. Genius, even.

I'm still not ready to get my hopes up, though.

Oh, no, wait, I get it!

Quesada erased his own memories to get Loeb--who was closing in on him--off his back, and after a complicated plot including OMD and making Tony a jerk, which gets Quesada in Loeb's good graces, will finally touch the first issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, restoring his true memories and personality, putting him in position to blacklist Loeb forever, and allowing him to create his ideal world where Squirrel Girl has her own series and no one gets cheaply brought back from the dead.

"Just as planned."

(I have no idea if this makes any sense, but Loeb was the first name that came to mind.)

Joe Q is Light Yagami?

Seems to me if he's any manga character it's more likely to be Tatewaki Kuno.

Consider: for a time, Marvel was trying to get the audience to believe that the "real" Peter Parker was Ben Reilly, and that the Pete we'd been reading about since at least 1976 (I think) was really the clone.

It's an amusing thought, but most likely they were just being sloppy and indifferent as usual. "Redhead? Vaguely-Peter looking thing? Slap it in there!"

Sad, but probably true. The firs time I scanned over it, I even mistook the "HEY" for "MJ!" But that's a pretty confusing font.

What the hell is up with Ben's shoes in that last panel? He looks like he's got Transformer feet.

He's wearing boots. To keep out the cold.

I've worn boots before, and they didn't look like they were blocks made of metal, even the ones with steel toes.

Ooh, there's a thought. I guess if people'd wear Uggs, they'd wear skiing boots with no skis.

But, Clone-of-Parker.

Nutter, surely?

When I saw 'What's wrong with Pete's memories' I immediately thought of the whole pedo thing.

Which I guess puts this into perspective.

You know, I'm actually going to go out on a limb here and have some faith that Marvel didn't just skim nineties comics looking for Peter/MJ panels. Someone might be onto something here....

Man, I miss Janine/Elizabeth. Even though I didn´t really care for the way she and Ben automatically fell in love here.

But awww, well there goes my hope that they were bringing her back on purpose. What? If ASM wanted to do an arc about the Reillys, why not have Pete discover more about his brother while Aunt May learns more about her family? Heck, you could even do an interesting reversal of the Clone Saga... if MC2´s anything to go by, Ben was going to be a father too (or already was depending on how old you think Darkdevil is), he just didn´t know it.

Ohhhhh wait I´m expecting new and interesting things from ASM. My bad.

A perusal of the page in question seems to indicate it was a montage of Ben Reilly images. None of them were Peter Parker or were meant to be.
