The first poster for next years Wonder Woman movie has been released

Full size image beneath the cut...

Power. Grace. Wisdom. Wonder.

Now these are principles I can get behind!

Meanwhile artists Joe Phillips, whose work I have happily featured before, has been putting together some faux film posters from the 40's onwards...

Pam Grier as Wonder Woman is, of course, perfection and Adrian Barbeau as Cheetah and Michael Sarazzin as Steve Trevor.

James Stewart without being able to use that trademark drawl... quite a challenge, but I have no doubt he'd have managed it.

Casting a Caucasian guy as the Mandarin would have been par for the course back in the day, I'm sure they'd never do such an insensitive thing these day... ooooh.... oops.

This one in particular is AWESOME... Redford as Cap works fine, and Cushing as the Red Skull would have been mesmerising.

Not always a DeNiro fan, but Palance as the Joker would have been something to see.

And this one seems almost too obvious...

Judging by the outfit, and comments elsewhere, Sophia would be playing Blackstarr, the living embodiment of the Unified Field Theory.

And some late additions

Danny Kaye as a Silver Age Joker would work rather well, and I can imagine he'd do the odd lapse into complete psycho rather well.

Katherine Hepburn as Catwoman? Sign me up NOW!

I was never sure who would have made a better Cap, Redford or Paul Newman.

I giggled over Blue Beetle and Booster Gold in a Hope/Crosby "Road" movie. It's perfect. All it needs is the obligatory "buddies exchanging wisecracks" song.

Am I the only one who think that Wonder Woman poster looks like the Liefield Cap image?

No, there's some seriously weird anatomy going on with her missing left shoulder. Though at least Diana is supposed to have breasts, so this artist is one up on Liefeld...

I have the full size poster version of Joe's Teen Titans poster from last year (he only printed one in this size and I was quite lucky to get it when he was selling them off at OzCon, cause right after I asked for it someone else did).

If I get a chance I'd definitely like the Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Booster Gold prints this time.

What show is the poster in the right bottom corner? I kinda dig the aesthetic.

It's Sakura Taisen/Wars which is mostly a video game franchise but has anime and live musicals... It's a steam punk story where members of an all female theatre troupe are also mecha pilots that fight demons (There's a Japanese language pun in there). Here's a video of most of the various intros: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYXppwtX6bQ

The poster specifically references one of the plays they perform in the story, "Because of Love..." which is basically a pastiche of Rose of Versailles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNX_-vpuxME (here performed live by the voice actors)

Nope. I don't care if it's good. DC/WB destroyed any hope with Man of Steel. They killed my interest with breakneck speed.

What finally put me off that was hearing the justification... that this is supposed to be the reason WHY Superman is averse to killing.

Umm, can't he just believe in the sanctity of life?

Certainly not with the way they portrayed the Kents in both MoS and BvS.

But yeah, you'd think maybe Clark would've already had a sanctity for life. Since MoS (more like PoS, am I right?!) came out, I've thought of several ways they could've handled things. Hell, you could STILL have the neck snap and make it work. You'd have to make sure you EARN it, though, for the audience. My ideal Superman should never kill, but if it absolutely must be in there, there are better ways of writing that.

I didn't totally hate MoS, or even DoJ but before I saw a video that quoted Snyder on this topic my interpretation was that Superman was fighting and enemy of equal strength and greater combat ability who WANTED to die, and was going to kill as many people as he could until he forced Kal-El's hand. He was committing suicide by cop and that's what caused Superman such emotional distress...

But then along comes Snyder saying this...

"I really thought he should kill Zod, and the why of it is this... If this is truly an origin story, his aversion to killing is unexplained; it's just in is DNA. And I thought we needed to have him do something, just like him putting on glasses and going to the Daily Planet, or any of the other things you're seeing him do for the first time that you then realize will become his thing."

AND THAT spoiled me on the scene, and which is why I often avoid commentaries even though I'm very interested in the how of the craft.

Um, if we're supposed to see him do something for the first time that will then become his thing, shouldn't we see him refusing to kill an enemy? By Snyder's logic, Superman should start out by hating the Daily Planet and thinking that glasses are dumb.

Are you familiar with 'Death of the Author'? Your own personal interpretation doesn't necessarily have to be overruled or overwritten by the Creator's original intention.

I really don't like the WW poster. Two tits and an ass and the top of her head is cut off? Who stands like that? MEH.

Yeah, it's a little weird the focus of the poster is her tits, and that we can't really see her face. But maybe I'm being overly sensitive. The posters for Superman Returns similarly focused on his chest.
Edited Date: 2016-07-23 06:13 am (UTC)

That's probably coincidental.

DC Movie Posters tend to focus more on the Costumes than the actors, with their faces either zoomed out, covered by something or blotted by shadow (Man of Steel, Superman Returns, Batman v. Superman, The Dark Knight Trilogy).

Her costume looks incredible - very much like what you'd expect from a terrifying warrior from the ancient world and thankfully not designed to really sexualise her.

I had a lot of issues with Batman Vs Superman, but Wonder Woman wasn't one of them. They've got a great actress portraying a great character - and if it's done right, it could be really sad to see her abandon the world after living through the horrors of two world wars, and seeing how messed up the world with.
Given the difficult times we now live in, I am sure many audience members will understand her reasoning, and feel a great stab of pity for her.
