Anyway, here's Maxima's death from the Superman event, "Our Worlds At War" - written by Mark Schultz, and drawn by Doug Mahnke. More after the cut!
Betraying an alliance of Earth, Apokolips, Daxam, Warworld and Almerac, (home of Maxima), Brainiac 13 a.k.a. Lena Luthor absorbs both arc villain Imperiex and Apokolips for a winner-take-all, causing the remaining Alliance planets to scatter.
Superman tries to convince Maxima, now distrustful of Earth after the B13 betrayal, to keep the alliance intact.

Maxima shuts Clark down, attacking the upgraded Warworld alone with just her resources.

The Justice League rescues her, but she realizes Warworld was about to shoot another absorbing tendril, this time at Earth.

With everyone else too busy to intercept it, Maxima prepares her warship for a sacrifice play:

Quoth Lana Kane, "And that's how they died." Bummer to see the portrayal of Maxima's death so detached: that medium shot's her last before she dies, not even an expressive close-up.
Still, always sad to see that brand of doomed final clarity in a death scene. Plus, there's much worse ways to die, like I guess trying to teach subject-verb agreement to bears.

Anyway, Maxima's death wasn't in vain - it inspires the Justice League to reapply her plan:

Her answer: the entire goddamn Paradise Island. It is f*cked up, but that's a story for another day.

Anyway, RIP Maxima! On a positive note, she's apparently alive, girl-crushing on Kara and currently staffed in Crucible Academy from the last New 52 Supergirl monthly, so all's well that ends well.
