With INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #13 showing flashbacks of Tony Stark and James Rhodes friendship, I thought I'd repost the issue that shows when Tony and Rhodey first met.
David Michelinie did an unusual split for IRON MAN #144. The first 6 pages are the conclusion to the first "Iron Man Space Armor" story. The remaining 16 pages are called "Apocalypse Then!" The art is by Joe Brozowski and Bob Layton.
We get a basic recap of Iron Man's origin, and since this issue came out in 1981, we still have Vietnam.

This 4 1/2 pages of a 16 page story.
This armor is only what Tony was able to build INA CAVE THE JUNGLE!!! FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS!!!

No, I don't know why he just doesn't take off the helmet and say "I'm Tony Stark." Rhodey would probably recognize him.
Tony is able to get a charge off Rhodey's chopper and help him fight off some attacking VC. But the chopper is toast.
Time for some 4th wall tapping.

Wild.
The duo find another VC base and are able to steal a helicopter while blowing up said base.

Wilson Pickett! Mini-skirts!

Tony didn't want people to know he needed the chestplate to stay alive. And then he went to "using the armor to fight crime."
Time for a more formal first meeting.

Rhodey doesn't learn Tony is Iron Man until IRON MAN #169, when Tony would rather stay in a perpetual alcoholic stupor than be Iron Man.
