Still, you'd think they might want to proceed with caution given that as a five-year-old he squashed Mephisto like a bug, and traumatic experiences have a way of triggering latent powers. If I'd been those demons the FF would have rescued Franklin from a day of fun amusement park rides and all the ice cream he could eat.
This whole story left a bad taste in my mouth in regards to Doom. I hope Bendis addresses it somehow in the new Infamous Iron Man title since it's about Doom trying to redeem himself.
Personally I'd prefer it be relegated to the "and we shall never speak of it again!" pile. Bendis worries me enough about that the panel with Victoria endangering the happy-ish ending of the Triumph and Torment graphic novel.
I, um, did something like this. A friend was trying to lure me into bed. I was oblivious because I was working on a difficult extra credit math proof. Completed the proof!
Didn't find out about my friend's attempt until she told me years later. We're still friends, we never hooked up, everything's cool. But I'm still mad at myself for being such a clueless idiot.
What gets me isn't him using Valeria (either of them). What gets me is that he uses magic to this point, since a big point of the character is that he's very cautious about using too much given what happened to his mom. If he didn't, then he would just fix up his face.
Franklin running into Hell reminds me of my work friend's story about his toddler running into an elevator without him on a trip to New York City (then spending the next hour and a half frantically looking for him). Like the comic book version of real parenting fears
I think Doom locked Reed up in his (Doom's) library with all the magical tomes and an "if you think you're that smart use all this knowledge to escape!" taunt once ... he couldn't.
Magic in the Marvel universe seems to have some sort of a psychological component that Reed misses for some reason (or alternatively it's alive and hates Reed's guts).
It also seems to depend on use of innate talent, like artistic ability. Strange was able to out-duel Mordo within a year of beginning his study of the mystic arts, and leap-frogged past people who have been practicing magic for decades or centuries. (Admittedly he had a one-on-one apprenticeship with the world's most qualified teacher, but the natural talent was there to begin with.)
David Alleyne (Prodigy) is the living proof that magic requires more than just knowledge. He was a knowledge-skills copying mutant who amongst others' also copied Doctor Strange... did this make him a sorcerer? Nope. Best he can manage is scaring the monsters with big words (up until the monsters realize that the big words ain't working for him).
But Ultimate Reed was able to become a master sorcerer in a short time under similar circumstances, when Doom had switched bodies with him. Not sure if that's because Ultimate Reed has more magical talent than 616 Reed, because Ultimate Reed was inhabiting Doom's body and thus had access to Doom's magic potential, or because 1610 magic works differently than 616 magic.
Waid's run on Fantastic Four is one of my favourite creator runs ever, but I'm surprise you didn't start with his first issue (arguably the high water mark for the entire series). I liked this storyline quite abit, even if I it was slightly reductive. Sometimes it's just fun to see a classic evil villain doing a nefarious scheme. (Plus I think the previous issue where he 'gives up' Valeria builds to Dooms plan in a more natural way)
