I love that the Kangs start the retconning after Hercules steps out.
" So which one of us is going to preempt Hercules? " " .. a.. are you se- " " No. No, I.. I realized the answer to that question as soon as I asked it. "
Pete, you're infringing on Diana's shtick with the cloakable radar-invisible aircraft.
Why would anyone work with Vision now, and not Spidey? Really? What has Spidey done recently that is worse than the last twelve issues of Vision's series?
Virginia did claim she was controlling the Vision, and that he was completely innocent. I imagine the Avengers wouldn't have wanted to examine that claim too closely.
Peter, Peter... good idea, nice intentions, but as usual your approach is as idiotic as a village fool competition.
What he really needs is, say, a domestic partner of some kind, possibly in a romantic sense (if that'd help), to occasionally "gently" tell him he's making a dog's breakfast of something. ... actually, knowing Peter, he'd probably screw that up as well, somehow.
Hey now, Peter really did do a terrible job on his pitch. The smart thing to do would have been been to ask a superhero or who know his identity to vouch for Peter Parker, or at least present the offer as Spider-Man. When some unknown guy in a suit offers you a bunch of really expensive stuff for free, the natural response is to try and find the catch.
Except Peters not the manipulative tycoon like Stark. Yes he lies but only to protect his identity. As to him making mistakes on his pitch well. You can always read DC where everyone is perfect
A bit tedious, though- " Let's build a character dynamic between two adults on one line from years ago where the irrationality of the character saying it was the joke! "
(Sure, it wouldn't be the Avengers without petty sniping or Spider-Man without getting on someone's nerves, but I'm still hoping for some kind of hatchet-burying.
" Look, I know you're annoyed by me and that I'm going to keep annoying you, but could we just.. get along? " " I could try. " " .. eh, that's all I expected. ")
So she is- I think I somehow mashed their conversation and the Falcon/Spider-Man one together.
Still annoyingly rooted in a one-off punchline, though, especially for a character who previously argued that superheroes are supposed to be better than petty disagreements.
(Granted, that was talking about Civil War II and this is a personal interaction- two very different scenarios, and anyway, that sort of apparent-hypocrisy-from-a-general-viewpoint is human enough to be believable.
I guess it's the over-the-topness that's annoying- as also pointed out in these comments, it's a bit JLI, and that sort of thing can grate.)
Nadia, a person with not even a year of superheroing under her belt, trying to diss Spider-Man? Dude's got mad cred. How many random people on the streets of NY have you saved, Wasp? Zero? How many heralds of Galactus have you fought? Hulks? Yeah, shut up.
It does seem to come out of nowhere, doesn't it? I mean, unless Nadia's literally connected to the wasp totem, which would surprise me.
I did like her jumping to defend Jarvis. Nadia's been quickly latching onto any possible family, which makes completely sense, so it's a good character moment.
I've actually never heard that phrasing before, so I was thinking maybe he's just fucking with her. But apparently people do say that. (I've heard "Someone walked over my grave," but rabbits weren't specified.)
So, May and Ben Parker are in their 80's when Peter is born, and Richard and Mary are in their 60's?
Time travel man, not even once.
Seriously though, time travel stories are a pet peeve of mine. I like the idea of Peter Parker suddenly becoming the backer of the Avengers, because that has the potential to be hilarious. I don't get the hate Spider-Man is getting, but then I've not been following the new Civil War enough to know what the heck has everyone's spandex in a bunch this time. Did Spider-Man kill Uncle Ben?
Also I have literally never heard the phrase "A rabbit ran over my grave". A quick google search tells me it is, actually, a thing, but yeah, it's weird that Sam would be telling that to Jane Foster.
And "Coming this Year", oh man. It's a risk, because who knows what's getting plotted this year for the yearly crossover and how that's going to play out, but credit where credit is due, it's a bold risk.
But yeah, woo Time Travel, where the rules don't matter!
You know, I've never understood the idea that the general hero population neither liked nor fully trusts Spider-Man. He's been out there longer than most of them, fighting the good fight no matter how much the public or press tear him down or smear his name. His worst sin is talking too much and making bad jokes.
Isn't he the Fantastic Four's closest friend and ally? And although I don't recall him interacting with the Defenders, that team is basically whoever Dr. Strange calls together on short notice anyway and he and Stephen are on excellent terms.
