Maya's motives are confusing. Give a terrorist superpowers so she can do medical research? She was also the first of many Iron Man villains who say they do exactly what Tony Stark does.
I wish that a lot of things were better about Iron Man 3. Like, you know, have Ben Kingsley as a perfectly intimidating, interestingly adapted Mandarin who isn't derailed by stupid shit. Seriously, Guy Pearce being the man behind the man and giving us another industrialist big bad for Tony to smack around briefly was so dull.
I haven't seen Iron Man 3 since it came out, but I...liked what they did with Kingsley? At least at the moment, in the theatre. It was a twist I don't think anyone saw coming, and Kingsley made it fun to watch. After Iron Man 2 I don't think I had any emotional investment in the franchise beyond watching RDJ be snarky and loving every scene with Rhodes.
Looking back, yeah, Kingsley's Mandarin could probably have rivaled Ledger's Joker in "amazing comic book villain" department. I'm sure there's a universe out there somewhere that got that movie, and I'm super happy for them.
I thought it was a pretty clever switch, actually. It also threaded the needle about the potentially problematic issues that the Mandarin presented. In fact, it played on those issues and turned them into intent from the villains, rather than unintentional problems caused by the creators of the comic. It basically avoided a large part of the conversation that surrounded the Ancient One, for example.
I can understand some fans frustration with it. But to this day I don't think Iron Man 3 was a bad movie because, or in spite of, the twist. Like you I thought it was clever to just yank the carpet out from under us like that, and Kingsley being pretty damn funny while doing it didn't hurt.
You know whats really, really interesting about Marvel? Even though the government in general and the Intelligence Agencies in particular are all full of short sighted, amoral control freaks, the US Military is almost always shown to be pretty ethical and responsible.
The number of weapons projects they have shut down because of ethics violations or just the horrific implications of the technology should it be fully realized is pretty impressive. Even the more questionable parts of the various super solider programs are usually shown to be the results of foreign teams or rouge agents.
