The Pepper Lake Monster

Here's an original story from Eerie #58 that Berni Wrightson wrote in addition to illustrating.

The story opens with a brief prologue that introduces the protagonist, George Summers. Summers has been hired by a university to investigate sightings of sea monsters and Pepper Lake is the last spot on his list. A sign warns him that 82 people have been killed by the monster and to boat at his own his risk.

After hours at sea, the monster surfaces.





Summers spends two weeks setting up an elaborate trap to catch the monster.




The next morning he shows the entire community his catch.

I do have to wonder if they killed him to keep the tourists coming or if they found his monologue annoying...

I wonder why it never occurred to him that these people would listen to this and think, "Hey, he's bragging about stealing OUR ACT."

It's stupid for them though. They could get much more tourists coming with their families and kids, if they can actually show off the monster, and display it in a child safe manner. Or if they'd at least had the reputation of being a place that that kind of creatures existed in.

I dunno, the Loch Ness monster has done well with only a grainy photograph. I think people like the mystery of it: does it really exist or not? Once you capture and exhibit it, it's just another animal in the zoo.

Thanks to the modern technology, the story would loose its punch. Cell phones with Data and GPS tracking would ruin the town's whole scheme...
