What If #5: Captain America and Bucky survived WWII

So in this reality, Cap manages to get on the missile with Bucky, and also pulls the right wires to disable it, surviving. Zemo tries to explain his failure to the Red Skull, but the Skull just shoots him with an experimental weapon that sends him into a coma that will last decades.









Buck manages to save Rick with Cap's shield, and the Hulk leaves before more soldiers come. They take Rick to rest at Steve's apartment, where Buck tells Steve that the serum has dulled with age, and now Buck can finally take Steve's place as Cap. Rick overhears them, and a new team is formed, with Buck becoming the new Captain America (though the public thinks it's the same guy) and Rick as his sidekick.

Which is weird because... I'm pretty sure 60s Hydra did have women in it...

I'm going to start a file for characters who remove costume/mask only to reveal costume/masks underneath. There's something hilarious about it for me.

Had to laugh at the Hydra commentary: "Why do we wear these itchy hoods when we all know each other?"

I'm reminded of an old horror comic where a character leads a hooded mob in chasing some nomads out of their town. He's cursed by them, unable to show his face again. He's last seen in a room full of his hoods as he keeps pulling them off.

Poor Bucky! This was long before the Winter Soldier storyline. Looks like he was always doomed.

I like the idea of Bucky, then Steve, as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Makes sense.

I love the idea back in quite a few of these old comics that Steve actually had a secret ID from the President and his military superiors (or that he still spent time in his civilian enlisted id at all).
