It's written by Peter Milligan and drawn by Juan José Ryp.
It opens in Etrusca, on the chief of the Vestal Virgins and a centurion of the Italian First Legion.
She, Rubria, had a task for him, Antonius Axia- rescue one of hers from a local cult.
She put it to him unofficially, because it wouldn't do to lose face by asking for official help.
He took three legionnaires to face the cult.
There was the shedding of blood, and then him and the one he'd gone to save.

" .. toxic gases that emanate from the bowels of their caves..
" .. and mangle the brain. That's what makes the cultists see their monstrous gods. "
" Excuses. " said the Emperor Nero.
" Or perhaps there really are monsters there. " responded Rubria.
" Some whisper that there is at least one monster living in Nero's palace.. "
Nero's hackles rose.
Rubria pressed her point- she wanted Antonius spared from execution for desertion.
She said only that he'd done so because he was doing her will.
Nero wondered why Rubria was making the argument: " Why are you so interested in such a centurion? "
Rubria acknowledged the interest, and that Antonius's mind wasn't currently in a usable state, thanks to his Etruscan experience.
The Virgins were repairing him, though.
First, they washed him in blood.
Second, they gave him reading.

Third, they shocked him.

Their work made him a man who, six years, was known as the Detectioner.
He detected things like those responsible for the disappearance of others.

He was a reconstructed man, whose life was something of a construct:

It was disrupted by a summons from Nero.

Nero wanted him to look into the reports of " ..evil creatures. Soldiers dying. Morale stinking. " there.
Antonius, who didn't want to leave his life in Rome, protested.
Nero insisted, first with the threat of execution.
" Then I'll take personal care of that son of yours. "
That got to Antonius.
" My boy, my Avitus!.. "

Rubria sent Drusa away, then told Antonius to go to Britannia.
Later, Nero complained to her: " I still wish I'd sent someone of equestrian rank. "
" You're such a terrible snob, Nero. "

(She dipped her finger in his drink for emphasis.)

(The facial expressions in this're good.)
