Is the whole point of SECRET EMPIRE Marvel mocking their own "Captain America is never wrong" policy? Which is clever, really.

Same. I've always wanted to see the idea of "Captain America is always right" deconstructed, and I'm fascinated with the "Broken Pedestal" trope.

I have this twisted hope that, by the end of Secret Empire, Steve Rogers will never be trusted again.

But I still think it's foolish to throw that away for this story, although Marvel is probably BS their way out of it.

It's like once the evil Superman thing became possible, there were a few every few years.

It's also so typical that people hated this, then liked it, and now might always want it.

Except we already had this BS from Mark Waid's run with a skrull masquerading as Cap. Guess what it was only 2 issues not a year.

My only fear is that the idolization of the nationalistic, flag-wearing war hero will resume stronger than ever as soon as this is over.

That the living symbol of America going fascist is being sold as a huge shocking event implies that it's surprising in the first place, so the whole thing will just end up as a reaffirmation of the rectitude of the good ol boys.

Except Steve, the real one, has always been about what America can be, the ideal. Not the propaganda or blind patriotism. After all, Steve has stood against the American government several times.

You DO know that Steve Rogers was explicitly created by two Jewish writrs to be an explicitly anti-fascist character, right? Like, he's very much born of New Deal NYC.

Calling him 'the living symbol of America going fascist' is not only a surface-level reading at best, it doesn't align with any of his adaptions, and somewhat disrespectful to Simon & Kirby, IMO.

The 'nationalistic flagwaving' has never been what Steve Rogers (not Captain America, Steve - after all, he's several times fought the good fight without being Cap) has been about. Well, maybe Ultimate Cap, but he's the exception that proves the rule.

I didn't even realize his comic had been cancelled. Marvel puts out so many series some just get lost in the glut. But the TV series is still going.

The tv series isn't in the same continuity as the comics, so why does it matter. Killing him in comics doesn't affect fans of the show.

If we are talking about the start of AvsX, I still think Cyclops should have said "It has to be Hope's decision" instead of "Why do they like you more than me? OPTIC BLAST!"

All right, Cyclops didn't say that specifically, but it felt like he did. Getting hated and feared while everyone kisses up to the Avengers had to get on Scott's nerves.
