Marvel sometimes has their superheroes fall into pits of self-loathing when they aren't superheroes anymore. They have to punch criminals in the face to feel any self-worth.

It's occasionally been revisited somewhat well--Steve Englehart's handling of Pym over in WCA nicely put a bow on it and did the last push forward and more recently in Unstoppable Wasp--but you're otherwise 100% right.

But they've gone back to this well far too many times.

I really like how the Avengers are like "Hank, you don't have to go, we can make an exception..." I mean even Cap was like "Maaaaybe we can bend the rules to let you back in" and Hank was like "No, I fucked up, and I got to take my lumps for it."

I kind of wish more celebrities had this kind of integrity in real life.

It is odd this wasn't mentioned during CIVIL WAR II. Of course, the big differences were 1. Clint wanted to save Hank from getting shot in the back and 2. Clint didn't know shooting the weapon would kill Egghead. It was an accident.

When did Hank start playing super hero again? I mean not as Doctor Pym, but as Goliath again? It was the 1990s, but when? Operation: Galactic Storm or earlier?

I think he came back in the main Avengers title as Giant Man sometime after Galactic Storm. Around the time of the Sersei/Black Knight/Crystal love triangle.
