There's a scene where Quasar shows up, has just enough time to declare the Quantum Bands as Thanos's downfall, only for Thanos to one-shot them before declaring that Quasar suffers from unwarranted dillusions of grandeur as he kills him.
That seems out of character for Wendell. In the Gruenwald series he suffered from a good amount of self-doubt and not seeing himself as good enough to be an Avenger.
The spell probably only intended for their lungs to process the atmosphere in space as they would oxygen, which would be moot if Thanos cuts off said atmosphere by encasing one's head in cosmic whatsis.
All that set-up for the Surfer's tragic "whiff" as he just so barely misses. Epic comic timing. "Hey Norrin, remember that time when the fate of the universe was in your hands, and you screwed it up?"
If you wanted to see how things might have played out if Norrin was able to get the Gauntlet away, might I suggest What If #104. Be warned, it gets rather cracktastic right quick..
This is one of my favorite big hero brawls. For me the choreography and pacing is great, and they manage to bring out the individuality of the characters and their different powers.
It also illustrates Thanos' creative wickedness. He doesn't just blow the heroes up, he devices different nasty ways to wipe each of them out.
There is also an actual strategy and plan for the heroes, which often seems to be missing from these big brawls.
Random observation - I just noticed that Thanos's created girlfriend Terraxia is wearing heels. Who knew that the Genocidal Titan subscribed to Earth female fashions?
Yeah, pretty much all the heroes in this battle would be at a disadvantage against no-luxury-options Thanos. The heralds of Galactus can fight him on his own level, as could a Thor who knows what he's doing and maybe Quasar, but he's generally a villain that requires the whole Avengers team to thwart and a deus ex machina to take out.
I'm just sad there wasn't room for Cap's "as long as one stands against you" speech. It was my first time reading one of those speeches from him, and it really got to me.
I really don't understand how this issue has turned into a classic moment in the genre. It bothered me at the time just because it was one of my first "kill 'em all" comics moments, and it bothers me now because most of the 20-odd characters who show up for the fight spend most of it standing around like bumps on a log watching each other die.
There isn't even an excuse where Thanos has a lot of cannon fodder on tap to keep them occupied, or where Thanos is chewing through them too quickly for anyone to keep up, the way Korvac does in that one issue of Avengers. If you read the full fight scene, most of the people who die do so while at least two or three other heroes are sitting there watching them and doing nothing about it. Quasar in particular could have jumped in at any time, and there's a line in the last issue about Dr. Strange providing medevac that never actually happens.
It's just lazy fight booking from Starlin, same as ever. I've often wanted to write the What If where Cap takes everyone aside before the fight and implements a strategy that has a snowball's chance in hell of actually working, or where Logan doesn't waste his shot and takes Thanos's arm off rather than stabbing him in the torso.
