"Whereas traditionally comic readers will tend to remember characters according to there powers or costume, I'd almost like it better in Top 10 if the powers where second most important. I want the personalities rather than the powers to be what people are remembering." - Alan Moore
Tvtropes made a point about League of Extraordinary Gentleman in that while Harry Potter was the most scathed, Moore seemed to have a problem with the boyhood hero trope in general, with copyright friendly expies of characters such as Tom Swift being depicted as arrogant, racist, and incompetent. Seeing the Richie Rich expy and the former kid scientist character seems to support that, and shows that he had this opinion before LOEG started showing these characters.
Incidentally*, Tvtropes points out he might have a problem with spy fiction as well, but given the kind of shit that spies do in real life I can see why an anarchist like Moore would reel at the though of glamorizing them.
Even the kind of crap that spies do in fiction, to be frank. It's impossible for me not to read most spy fiction as unabashed glorification of imperialistic interventionism.
A character named Cheney being a electricity-powered categorist. Of course, that was 1999, a good year before Dick Cheney became well known. Also, Dick Cheney has his problems, but I don't think he hates robots.
Ah, the introduction of Joe Pi, my favorite post-organic peace officer. (Sorry, Stel. You're a close second.) I admit, when I first read this, I didn't know how to really process him, but after a few more reads I did find myself enjoying him and the way he presents himself in the story. It's a shame he didn't really get much time to grow before the end of this volume.
A "ward sister" is a somewhat archaic name for a senior nurse in charge of a ward in British hospitals. They're usually called "charge nurses" these days.
I was pretty devastated by Girl 1's death at the time, but I really grew to like Joe Pi. I was sad with how little he was utilized in Beyond the Farthest Precinct.
Also, seeing these posted on scans_daily made me go out and buy the trades on comixology. It's been great to catch up with this series again.
People are often very vocal about their disdain for groups they're secretly attracted to. For examples, see half the televangelists and Right-wing politicians out there.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.

*Moore really likes this word for some reason.
