As a reader, I missed the FF. I also felt like there was a lot of unresolved feelings there between Ben and Johnny and from them toward their missing family. They needed some space to grieve and I wanted 2in1 to be the place for that, while giving them a reason to explore, to BE the Fantastic Four.

So Ben and Johnny are stuck on an alternate Earth run by a crazy Spider-Man and their powers have finally run out.

Kind of reminds me of the Howard Mackie Spider-Man story that had Peter come to terms with MJ's death after a long period of denial. A few months later Mackie's last story brought her back.

I like Chip's storytelling generally but its really hard to sell this plot when no one (including the characters themselves) thought Reed, Sue, and the kids were going to stay gone. If anything I'm surprised it took this long.

It also doesn't help that Fantastic Four #1 is out and shows Johnny and Ben back on Earth. Kind've kills the tension here. What's weird about it is the same editors are on both books so you'd think that maybe there would be better coordination as to when this book ends and the other one begins, or if the other one begins have the story be exclusively about Reed, Sue and the kids.

Moreso, there is a very similar "Johnny is freaking out, Ben is morbidly accepting that everything dies (tm)" scene which is happening on the Prime Earth after this adventure ends, so that's weird and confusing.
Maybe they'll have a memory loss while getting their powers back?..

Dumb question but is Johnny bisexual? I thought Marjorie Liu confirmed it?
