The story of Ultron's return continues - this time Machine Man gets the cover title slot while Jocasta is relegated to guest star role. Although, TBH, The Thing is the real side character in the issue, spending most of the time mind controlled by Pym Jr.

This was to mark both Machine Man and Jocasta's last major appearance in the mainstream Marvel universe for some time, so make the most of it...

Two years after the cancellation of his solo title, Machine Man reappears in the pages of Marvel Two-in-One.

Such is the slump in the character's already niche popularity, Aaron doesn't even get to be one of the two in Two-in-One.

Instead The Thing and Jocasta take top billing, but we do get a final visit to Delmar Insurance, because one thing superheroes really need is a friendly insurance agent.

As a reader, I missed the FF. I also felt like there was a lot of unresolved feelings there between Ben and Johnny and from them toward their missing family. They needed some space to grieve and I wanted 2in1 to be the place for that, while giving them a reason to explore, to BE the Fantastic Four.

Well, I'll say one thing for the Identity Crisis posts, it's making me want to post more NON Identity Crisis stuff.

"I'll bet the first comic I lay hands on in the cathedral-like vault which is my comic collection (ahem!) is more fun that that!" and by a weird coincidence (and it really was) the first comic I laid my hands on was actually one of the very very first American comics I ever bought with my own pocket money.

So from the dim and distant past of 1979... I bring you a story involving Ben Grimm taking a shower, a hero wearing a protagonist over his crotch, gratuitious authorial inserts and a shapeshifting alien with a low boredom threshold and a very short attention span.

I tracked this down after seeing a page from it on a Black Widow fan's Tumblr, and it did not disappoint. It's packed fat with early Chris Claremont dialogue, but it's a cool done-in-one story just the same.

In the past, I've mentioned that the Flash's "Rogues Gallery", only really became the bunch of... if not exactly friends, then vaguely companionable allies, in a retcon when Wally became the Flash.

However, I do love the concept of criminals not all being monstrous, antisocial loners, and of course, this being comics, someone else did it earlier.

And better yet, the group I have in mind debuted in a story featuring not only Ben Grimm, the ever lovin' Thing, but one of my favourite C-list superheroes (here depicted in chibi mode by the redoubtable Katie Cook)

Found this in one of my longboxes and having fond memories of the insanity it contained, thought I'd share.

"Marvel Two-In-One" (with regular star The Thing) was a sort of companion title to "Marvel Team-Up" (regular star Spider-Man) and both were sort of an answer to "The Brave and the Bold" (regular star Batman) and "DC Comics Presents" (Regular star Superman).

Take a widely known, ground level hero and add lesser known (or one not noted for solo aoppearances) hero, add plot, sit back and enjoy.

MTiO produced some excellent stories under regular writer Mark Gruenwald, notably the Project Pegasus Saga, the debut of the second Serpent Squad (Which would later grow into the Serpent Society) and others, but this a fun, done-in-one little romp, featuring a guy made of rocks, and a guy with wings, fighting armoured attackers after a night at the disco...
