I've honestly thought giving the Joker some kind of resurrective healing factor (ie, he can only heal after he's died) would go a long way to explaining both how he survives all the times he's apparently "died" and his wildly different personalities.
Nightwing telling Batman that he's too trusting... Even with TAS Bats being a bit nicer and TAS Dick being somewhat less outgoing compared to his comic incarnation, that exchange is a little hard to swallow.
It does remind me of the time Cassandra Cain came back after being brainwashed into supervillainy and Dick was the one screaming that she can't be trusted and Bruce being the one talking about second chances and giving friendship speeches.
DC keeps switching Dick and Bruce around, like the issue of JMS' story of Superman walking across America and Dick being all grim and judgmental while Bruce is more tolerant and smiling!
I'm surprised that Batman doesn't have a cell or some other form of confinement in the Batcave. Surely he's considered the possibility of needing to restrain someone, whether it's a villain, an ally, or even himself for some reason.
Or at the very least, keeping Joker drugged to the gills (granted, comics have waffled a bit on whether or not the Joker has a degree of immunity to toxins, poisons, etc).
Yeeeaaa - this whole "killing is bad no matter the reason" just doesn't fit for a mad dog of a person like the Joker. But as we all know Joker can't die so we keep gumming this dead horse of a moral.
That moment there where the Joker is honestly fearful for his life is a great one. It's little human touches like that that make the TAS Joker by far the best incarnation of the character. He's not treating it like a joke, he's not laughing mad, he's just a guy afraid for his life.
I think part of it is that Joker wants his death to be AMAZING. He wants to go out in some knock down drag out fight with Batman they'd be talking about for ages to come. He doesn't want to die at the hands of some (in his mind) nobody.
Its the same thing as with Charlie Collins in Joker's favor. He'll laugh off plunging into shark infested waters, or getting blown up in a crashing plane, but the thought of just getting killed by some normal guy whose got fed up with his crap is horrifying to him.
