Alan Moore: "While doing Supreme, it occurred to me that what I've been doing was to go through the history, or pseudo-history, of a Superman-type character, from his origin in the '20s or '30s through to the present day. In the course of these stories, I was also showing some background that had previously never been seen of the Extreme Universe as it was during those decades. I had flushed out the group the Allies into a sort of '40s version called the Allied Supermen of America, which is a kind of All
Winners Squad/ JSA group of heroes. I mentioned to Eric Stephenson that if Rob wanted, in the course of Supreme, I could remodel the Extreme Universe and make it a much more coherent and dynamic kind of place."

I, for one, can't wait until you get to the chapter where Jack O' Lantern takes centre stage. It seems Moore could easily have written one heck of a Spectre series, had he been given the chance!

Which reminds me: er, Jack? Mate? Not that I'm complaining, but did you only metaphorically turn those Klansmen to grass?

If he's anything like Golden Age Spectre, I suspect those guys really are fertilizer now.

This may be my favourite issue of the run. The EC pastiches are fun both in their own right and as a metafictional comment on the diminished sales and cultural impact of superhero comics after WWII (at least until the Comics Code essentially killed off two of the genres -- horror and crime -- that had overtaken the capes).

Also, the "VAMP!" panel cracks me up every time.

Alan Moore's entire run of Supreme really is one of the most pitch-perfect deconstructions of Superman, super-heroes, and comic books in general throughout the decades.
