New look at Joaquin Phoenix as Joker

So a few days ago we got our official look at Joaquin Phoenix as 'Arthur Fleck' which received a lukewarm response given that it was him looking normal. Today they released a look what appears to be him in full Joker makeup (or the early stages at least).

I really hope that isn't the final makeup they go with. He looks like a friendly birthday party clown, not like the Joker.

I am honestly not entertaining any expectations for DCU films for a while. Joker is also one of those characters that has a wide range. This could be awful or this could be amazing. I thought Heath Ledger was going to be awful and was proved horribly wrong.

The bar is set so low for DC films at this point that anything not made by Zach Snyder will probably be somewhat well-received.

Chris Nolan, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Moore seemed to understand that nailing the Joker down to any one origin story diminishes him. The premise of this film seems to not understand this. I could be wrong, but given the recent track record, I'm not optimistic.

BTAS gave him the Napier origin story in Phantasm.

IIRC they never actually gave him a name in Phantasm. He was just a nameless goon that worked for the mob. It was definitely most similar to the Napier origin from the first Keaton film but they never specified who he was.

Though, in an episode of BTAS ("Dreams in Darkness" the one where Batman is incarcerated at Arkham Asylum) Jack Napier is stated to be the Joker's real name.

("Jack Napier, Harvey Dent, Pamela Isley...or as you call them, The Joker, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy...")

It's a bit hokey - "And Starring: Andy Kaufman as THE JOKER"

But then before TDK I had a similar reaction to Heath Ledger's Joker. Grimdark and grunge. What it ended up being was something powerful and indescribable. But his performance required a director like Nolan, with a particular vision and sense of story.

Phoenix is a good actor, and he can give a solid performance - the unknown factor imo is the script and the direction. The folks behind this have previously directed/written...The Hangover Trilogy? War Dogs? Due Date?

Uhh...well...sure, I guess? Idk. I'm not very hopeful.
