Well, PETA apparently sponsored this story. They’re not exactly big friends of subtlety. Or logic. Or animals, really.

apparently at one point medical schools were thinking about using lawyers as test subjects rather than rats, because researchers didn't get emotionally attached to them, like they do to the rats.

Per Neil's intro to the story in (whichever collection I first read it in, found the quote but not the attribution)

"For the record, I wear a leather jacket and eat meat, but I am quite good with babies." I get the impression that this one was really just for the money. I think the money went to PETA, rather than Neil, so parse that as you will.
