Forget partnering with Spider-Man - Gibbon being a superhero in the Marvel Universe is clearly a bad idea. Being a Marvel hero means an endless cavalcade of abuse and ingratitude. That's a lot of people getting tossed off of roofs.
Not that Pete is secretly testing him or anything. He's really just being a dick.
This inspires me to ask what is probably a dumb question, but in all the multiversal spider crossovers, has the Spiderman from Electric Company ever shown up?
As someone who is somewhat sensitive to insults and mockery and teasing, I totally feel for Gibbon. Of course that doesn't justify him becoming a super villains, but if Peter had handled this a bit more diplomatically things might have gone better for him.
Isn't Peter OOC here? I may be wearing nostalgia glasses, but I don't remember him being a dick like that...
Also, what's with the circus boss? You find a guy who is far better than your best acrobats, and your reaction is "oh noes, he better stop being so good or else the incompetents will quit!" instead of "awesome, I hit the jackpot, this guy can draw in so many customers!"
Back in that era of comics, everyone was kind of a jerk for the most part. It doesn't make it better, but a lot of fights came out of simple disagreements.
There are some extenuating circumstances -- we're told elsewhere in the issue that Pete's been running non-stop for several days with no sleep, plus he's going through some relationship drama with Gwen. But yeah, he definitely could have been a little more sympathetic (especially given his own history with being bullied, etc.). But that's Pete in a nutshell: He's so wrapped up in his own concerns that he doesn't pay enough attention to what's in front of him, and the next thing you know, Uncle Ben's dead...
It's not stated outright but I suspect the circus boss thinks the Gibbon is too ugly to be headliner no matter how good his moves are. People - especially back in the '60s - do expect the trapeze artists to have a movie-star look about them (see: the Flying Graysons).
And no, this sadly isn't that OOC for early-days Peter. You think this is bad - one early story had him showing up to wreck the Human Torch's birthday party for no damn reason other than that Johnny pissed him off (in general, not for some specific incident).
